Is there such a place as Newcastle UPON Lyme ?

GlitterBaby Report 15 Mar 2013 22:02

Agree with 1911 as a possible

BUT the marriage and census do not match with the place given as Newcastle Under Lyme

Think we need some feedback

rootgatherer Report 15 Mar 2013 22:08

Mike, I took it to mean Newcastle under Lyme but perhaps it is Newcastle upon Tyne. Either way as GB has said the Cheshire marriage is the only one coming up on Freebmd.

GlitterBaby Report 15 Mar 2013 22:21

Even if the 1911 census is correct then the marriage cert is still going to be needed as quite a few Emily Jones born around that time and in that location

Cheshire Marriage indexes for the years: 1903
Surname Forename(s) Surname Forename(s) Church / Register Office Registers At Reference
JONES Emily YOUNG Thomas A Nantwich, Civil Marriage Cheshire Central NA/35/35

From Newcastle-under-Lyme it's abt 10km to the Cheshire border, where Nantwich RD begins - it's another 10km to Nantwich itself.
The above marr could have taken place in the Nantwich register office.
However, it could also have taken place in an approved non-conformist church anywhere in Nantwich RD.
For earlier non-conformist marrs, the registrar wold have to attend to record the marr in his official register.
This changed in 1898, and non-conformists (excl RCs) were authorized to keep official registers, but it took some of them a couple of years to get authorized.
(My wife's grandparents were wed in Standishgate Wesleyan Methodist Chapel in Wigan - its minister only got authorized in 1902)
RCs were only authorized in the 1980s.
