On the right track Thomas's father George married a Fether, nee trayhorn

Yes that was the place i was referring to as an orphange, he was placed there with his brother by a lady (Mrs ? Brown from memory) and taken out by a gentleman (i have the names but can not remember atm) he moved further up north then was taken to London area and became a baker, i do not know what happened to his other siblings or why he was placed, what happened to his mother or who she was

The 1901 census also has a Thomas Knott - aged 13- at The Hackney Union Training School in Brentwood, Essex.

Trawling through the Poor Law Records on Ancestry, I've found a Thomas Knott and Robert Knott at this place - but no other information is given, not even an exact year. As the records are not indexed, it would take days to trawl through them all.

There's also a Jane Knott admitted to a Hackney Union School/Workhouse:

Jane Knott b. 1881 - orphan - brought in by her aunt (Mrs. Ogan) of 35, North Street, Hackney. Admitted 6/7/1896 Discharged 21/8/1896

Could this be Thomas' sister?

i had no idea Jane was placed as well thank you i will follow that lead...thinking about it Mrs Ogan sounds more familiar than Brown...her aunt? thats another lead worth following..who is Mrs Ogan..thank you.
My mother says that the 'orphange' he was placed at burnt down but some records remain clearly, and i wonder if this is a story my grandfather told..
I wonder why no record of his mother can be found but maybe? the Ogan line is the key although she would probably be under her married name.

sorry yes this is definatly Thomas's sister, his siblings are George 18644, william 1880, Jane (also recorded as Jame) 1882, Robert 1884 and arther 1887

I think Christina's info is more relevant - there is no sign of a brother on the 1901 I posted, and it is not an orphanage it is a reformatory (like a juvenile jail).

No! Sorry, I think I'm wrong there. Having found the entry for Jane Knott again, I now see it's for Rottingdean Certified Infirmary.

I've tried copying and pasting the entry, but no joy there.
