Thanks again MarieCeleste. You have been amazing!! You have given me new great-aunts and uncles I never knew I had! Seems like Clifford never married and died young as a result of serving in the military during WW1. I now have lots of leads to follow. Look forward to seeing Edith's photo if you would forward the passport image to me :-) Thanks again ... John

Hi John, I'll send you the passport application tonight via the Genes message system, it's just a small photo but it will still be nice to have.

I would strongly suspect that Edith is the Peter recorded on the 1910, and as for Noah/Harry well his father seemed to vary between William/Joseph. It's not that unusual really, some people know me by my first name and some by my middle and it was the same with my father, guess some families are just like that? Also, your Edith seemed to switch between Edith and Emily.

John

John Report 22 Mar 2013 08:11

Thanks MarieCeleste.
Edith Hatch is definitely the right lady. When she returns to England the address Highfield Terrace, Rawdon Leeds is my grandmother's house. It is also where my mother was born. She clearly married Francis Hatch.
It's strange about Noah calling himself Harry and the other mis-recorded details!
Is there a way I can get the passport photo of Edith off the web?
Thank you for this and for your time. It's the first time I have used the community message boards and I didn't expect such a great result. Much appreciated.
If you uncover any more info look forward to hearing from you, but thanks again :-D

.. and this was her returning from that trip to England

Boston Passenger and Crew Lists, 1820-1943

Age: 25

Appeared to be travelling alone, was going to 14 Rutland Street.
...........................................................................................................

When she'd arrived in England a few months earlier she was going to 16 (or might be 15) Highfield Terr, Rawdon, Leeds

UK Incoming Passenger Lists, 1878-1960
Name: Edith E Hatch
Birth Date: abt 1896
Age: 28
Port of Departure: New York, New York, United States
Arrival Date: 30 Jun 1924

Found her as Hatch!

U.S. Passport Applications, 1795-1925 about Edith Emily Hatch
Age: 25
Father Name: Francis Dane Hatch - No! that's her husband.
Father's Birth Location: Brookline Massachusetts
Father's Residence: Cambridge Massachusetts

The transcription is all wrong, the father's details on there relate to her husband.

She was born 7 April 1899 in Leeds, England. Resided 14 Rutland Street, Cambridge, Massachusetts with her husband.

The passport application was dated June 1924 and she required it to visit relatives in England.

There's a photograph of her, she was a nice looking lady.

This seems to be Edith and William Randolph in 1930:

1930 United States Federal Census

Name: Edith S Churchill
Gender: Female
Birth Year: abt 1900
Birthplace: England
Race: White
Home in 1930: Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts
Marital Status: Married
Immigration Year: 1906 << same as rest of family
Relation to Head of House: Wife
Spouse's Name: William R Churchill
Father's Birthplace: England
Mother's Birthplace: England
Occupation: Housewife
Education:
Military service:
Rent/home value: $40 rent per month
Age at first marriage: 21 <<<<
Parents' birthplace: England

Household Members:
Name Age
William R Churchill 32 - a painter
Edith S Churchill 30

Her middle initial looks more like a B on the image.

Wiiliam R states he was 30 at first marriage which ties in with the 1928 marriage, whereas Edith states she was 21 which implies a prior marriage.

William R's parent's were Canadian.

I'm trying to make sense of the info for the family on the 1910 US census.

Noah seems to be masquerading as Harry, the birth year is about correct, the occupation given is machinist (Noah was a mechanic so similar). On the original image they say they've been married 14 years but Noah and Emily married 1891 so that should be 19 years?

They say 4 children born and still alive and the children listed are Clifford born 1898, Peter born 1899 and Lilly born 1903 - all England. There's also Charles born 1907 in Massachusetts so that's the 4 recorded on the census accounted for? So where's Edith Emily?

There was no mention of a Peter on the shipping lists. Has Edith Emily been terribly misrecorded? On the original image Peter's name looks like it could be Ruth but has been recorded as son.

Thank you so much PricklyHolly, Marie Celeste/Thelma!! Clever U!
You have discovered I have another great aunt - Lilly Bland (two L's), To clearup the confusion: Emily Bland (nee Blackshaw) is the sister of my grandmother, Lily Annal (one L - nee Blackshaw). My mother is Winifred Pick (nee Annal) and I am John, Melvyn Pick.
I'm really impressed with your research. Mystery solved - of course they emigrated!! It has also jolted a memory from my childhood about relations in Canada and I recall reading letters from Edith sent to my Mum from Florida where she mentions Lilian and occasionally Norm - who I now realise was Randolph's brother.
It is now a complete mystery how Edith E Bland came to be Edith B Hatch! Was Edith married before she married W R Churchill? Perhaps the B stands for Bland and was mistaken for an unusual middle name when it was in fact a double-barreled surname? Who knows? They obviously moved from Canada to Boston USA. They ended up in Hollwood Florida for the last 20 or more years of their lives, and I think the address was Pierce Street if my memory is accurate.
Can you help me any more?

Hi Marie

I have probably confused things on here by posting info regarding Lily Blackshaw who i thought......on first reading the OP, was the cousin that John was seeking information about.

But after re-reading the OP...i realised that Lily was actually John's maternal Grandmother.

Sorry for the confusion.
