Censuses 1841-1901 are on Ancestry and FMP........subscription sites. Transcribed records only

Early baptisms etc MAY be found on the LDS site

Your best bet is the 1911 census on SP.............it will tell you how old the parents are and where they were born.

Those details will enable a search for them in earlier years

A Scottish birth certificate usually give the place of the parents marriage. Is that on Mary Jane's certificate please?

If you can't find the marriage in 1900 try looking a year either side - just in case the informant accidentally gave the wrong year. Also try just using the surnames without a forename as James may have used Jimmy or Jim and it is possible that Mary may have been May or Maisie etc.

If you stay in or near Edinburgh you can spend a day at Register House and go through all kinds of registers. The more info you have to start, the better.

If you haven't been to register house (Scotlands People centre) in Edinburgh, you can get a free two hour "taster" session where they will show you what's available and how to use the records.

A normal day session costs 15 pounds and runs from 0900 to 1630 Mon - Fri. All searches are included though printouts, if you need them - I never have, cost 1 pound.

Reggie - I have had a look at the 1911

James, General dealer and his wife Mary were both born in England, Married 12 years, 7 children born and 3 living. James was 33 and his wife 31. The other two living children Edward age 7 and John 6 months.


It is possible that they weren't married? I would be tempted to look for the births for Edward and John (both born Midlothian) to check the parents marriage details given on them.

So, if they claimed in 1911 to have been married 12 years, the date of March 1900 is not correct

Unknown - the bit you are unsure of on the birth certificate (just above the address) is the time of the birth - 7h. 30m. PM

If James and Mary died in Scotland, you could look for a death for Mary as her death registration would name both parents if the informant knew the details.

hi, ive found an old birth certificate and marriage certificate that me mam got a while ago but she thought it wasn't right because of a maiden name, its for a birth for john young born the 10th of September in Edinburgh father James young general dealer and mother Mary young maiden name muirhead, married in Edinburgh march 10th i cant really make out the year i looks like 1900, and a marriage of James young and Mary muirhead McKenzie in Edinburgh on the 13 march 1900. so every thing adds up i think except for the maiden name on my grans birth certificate

It could be that was just a mistake on your Gran's birth registration. Perhaps Mary was illegitimate or her father had died and her mother re-married so she may have been known by more than one surname before she married James.

Check the marriage certificate for the names that Mary gives for her parents and then try to find her on earlier census.
