Could someone look at the 1861 census using just the initials J (first name) D (surname) birth 1849c Sunderland.I come up with result below which I believe may be a boys orphanage in Sunderland.

J D 11 Sunderland, North Bishop-Wearmouth

Thanks Andrew my requests yesterday was really looking for my g/grandfather Joseph Drummond who is missing in the 1861 census His father was a seaman and his mother had died. yesterday i was wondering if he was with his aunt Elizabeth or aunt Jane and wrongly transcribed as having their marrage surnames but there was no Joseph living with any of his aunts

Andrew

Andrew Report 21 Mar 2013 19:09

Its a good possibility. With no family to take him in the workhouse was the only option.

Intersting, the next entry on the schedule is 'R D' formerley sailor age 68 also born Sunderland. Any relation?

I dont think so both his father b-1819 Whitby and his granfather b-1788 Scotland were called James but R,D could be a relative of his grandfather
I will enquire at records office tomorrow if there is any further information to be had

drummo

drummo Report 22 Mar 2013 20:53

The Sunderland records office does not hold the workhouse records they are at the Archives in Newcastle but I was told they may not be available to the public to keep personal information of others safe. so I have e-mailed them with an enquirey

Hi EVEIE yes that is the other James Drummond b- dec 1819 whitby to John and Mary and the one who died 1863 and the death date has been mistakenly added to the tree of my family. My James Drummond was born OCTOBER 1819 Whitby to James and Mary,he can not be found anywhere after his marriage to Mary Greenwell 1845 and the birth of his son Joseph William Drummond in 1848 in Sunderland
The two JAMES'S born in Witby in 1819 may be cousins?

I will have to wait untill I get a reply from the Newcastle archives to see if they can confirm this or not

EVEIE

EVEIE Report 23 Mar 2013 16:34

wouldn't jd initials be jwd not j d

drummo

drummo Report 23 Mar 2013 16:40

Could well be but the middle name or initial is not always used for example the 1871 census above Actually J.D could be anyone with those initials I will just have to wait and see what comes back from the archives
