Trying to extend family tree. I know John Maples was my g.g.g.grandad born 1790 and he was married to Hannah Hodgkinson. He was born in Egmanton Nottingham.
I then have a gap back to Richard Mapals. Note the spelling of the surname is different, Now, my dad Harry Mapals told me about my g. grandad William Maples who changed the spelling of his surname from Maples to Mapals. He said he had seen it carved in stone and that's the way it would be spelt. I know there is a large house on Kirton Road, Egmanton, Nottingham. Above the door, carved in stone is "Richard Mapals 1734" according to English Heritage the house is a listed building, and whilst Richard was building it he came into financial difficulties and hung himself. It seems from then the spelling has changed to Maples, could the family have been embarresed by his death? From then till John Maples 1790 I can't find anyone. There could be two more generations in between. And I can't find any Mapals before Richard Mapals.
This all seems a bit long winded. Hope someone can give me some advise.

Thankyou everyone for your help. I'm sure because of the surname and location they are all my ancestors. I'm still curious about the spellings of Maples/Mapals.
