Frances Report 24 Mar 2013 15:04

I have found :-

CLAPHAM HERBERT M 1872 39 North Bierley
CLAPHAM ANNIE E F 1877 34 North Bierley
CLAPHAM ALBERT M 1898 13 North Bierley
CLAPHAM MAURICE M 1903 8 North Bierley

but I cannot find a place of birth for Herbert or Annie. Neither can I find them getting married. Does the full 1911 census provide any clues please?

Many thanks,
Frances

Thank you George and Potty, North Bierley is on the outskirts of Bradford. I shall have to go and look on the map for Kelfield

No wonder I couldn't remember Kelfield, it's near Selby, well away from Bradford.

I did see the Herbert Ashworth marriage but York seems to be quite a distance away for either of them so I was hoping something better might turn up. There does not seem to be a 1901 census to compare the family.

Thank you Mel. The facts are there but they do seem to be getting around a bit! Presumably Annie went back to her mother's for the the birth of Albert. Quite a trek from Thornton.
I am going to have to put some heavy concentration into this one.....

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 24 Mar 2013 15:42

There were four siblings baptised the same day so some would be older:

West Yorkshire, England, Births and Baptisms, 1813-1910

Name: Herbert Clapham
Parish: Halifax, Haley Hill, All Souls
Baptism Date: 23 Jun 1881
Father's Name: Dawson Clapham - a stone mason
Mother's name: Eliza Emma Ashworth Clapham

Their address was Booth Town Road

The other siblings baptised were Sarah Ashworth, Harriett and John. No actual birthdates given. The parents obviously saved them up and had them done as a job lot.

Note the Ashworth connection, this is the right area going by Herbert's birthplace on census.

(Frances - are those rock cakes not ready yet?)

EDIT: Just realised the baptisms are the day after the parent's (bigamous) marriage.

Thank you MarieCeleste. Presumably Dawson and Eliza were before their time in having a load of children without bothering to get married.

I was a bit concerned that the rock buns might have gone stale during transfer so I have eaten them in your stead. Plus brushing milk on them made me think that you had confused them with scones (pronounced by my mother as scons (true Yorkshire)

Where were these rocks cakes then, on another thread?????????

I did'nt see any on this thread :-( :-( :-(

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 24 Mar 2013 16:03

Yes Mel, Frances offering them earlier in the week!

This may be why the kids were all christened 1881:

West Yorkshire, England, Marriages and Banns, 1813-1935

Name: Dawson Clapham - widower, a stonemason
Age: Full Age
Marriage or Bann Date: 22 Jun 1881
Parish: Halifax, Haley Hill, All Souls
Father's Name: William Clapham - carpet weaver
Spouse's Name: Eliza Emma Ashworth Chapman, spinster
Spouse's Father's Name: William Chapman - a dyer

Witnesses: James Ashworth and Frances Broadbent.

Address for both bride and groom was Elgin Street, Booth Town Road. The marriage record has them both as full age but the banns has them both as 34.

EDIT: He was NOT a widower!! First wife Sarah alive and kicking on later census.
