It's on order :)

Thanks.
My grandfather has always said that his Dad came from the Birmingham area but I had no proof.

Daniel just make sure you're following the right man! You say you "think" that the one born Birmingham is yours - you need to establish that for a fact. Have you got James' marriage certificate to confirm who his father was?

I think my James is the one from Birmingham.

I made the rookie mistake and didn't check for misspellings. It appears that his surname was transcribed with an 'e' and not an 'a' at the end of Merriman.

The fun of searching continues..... I'm really interested in finding some information about his service in the forces though because my Grandfather would love to know what happened here. I will take a look at the veterans information and see what comes of that.

Thanks for your interest :)

There are two James Merriman born 1906 on the 1911 - a James L born Nanpanton Leics and a James born Birmingham. Are either of these yours? You didn't say where yours was born.

Daniel, don't give up yet!

Who did he marry? Where and when?

The marriage certificate should give his father's details, providing he knew his father. This might help.

Also, when and where did he die?

Thanks for the info guys I'm hitting a bit of a brick wall because although I find a record in the 1911 census where he's 5 years old, I can't find a birth record, I just thought a military record might fill in some gaps...
Unfortunately I think I might have gone as far as I can.

http://www.veterans-uk.info/service_records/army.html

Read this site as it mentions the following

A Subject Access Requests (SAR) form needs to be completed in order to access records.
Records for all ranks in the Army that served after 1920.

I don't think that military records from the 1930s are available online. I think that you have to apply for them and there is a charge. Also I am sure you have to prove your relationship to the person.

Hi All,

I'm trying to find information on James Merriman. I believe he was born in 1906 but I'm waiting for the certificate to arrive in order to get the proof!

He is registered on My Grandfather's birth certificate (born 1930) as a gunner in the royal artillery.

I've tried searching on here, ancestry and google but with no real success. Can you please offer me any advice on where to look or maybe help me with a search if you have access to a useful source?

Thanks in advance - happy searching
