I have found this marriage BUT it is the original entry only so does not give me a page and/or volume number required to send for the marriage certificate. I know the date of marriage was 26/12/1832 in Huddersfield and the references on the page of entry are page 198 Nr. 592 plus an old reference D32/30 and new ref. WDP32/30. These are strange to me but do I have enough to apply for a certificate??

thanks
Paul Brooke

As its pre 1837 there will be no certificate to order. The only record will be the church /parish register.

Would not help anyway as parents are not given in 1832

He signed but she made her mark.

Will send a copy thru GR message

Thanks for the responses all. As the detail on the presumably church/parish record does NOT give the actual church where the marriage took place what can be done to find further information such as who were Joseph's parents? Elizabeth's parents I know, (by the way father was George SHEPLEY Hampshire according to my info.).

You'll need to look for Joseph's baptism - where and when was he born?

For clarification am I correct in thinking (following the information sent to me above) that marriage records pre 1837 are no help in ascertaining parents of those being married?

Paul

P.S. I repeat, as far as I recall I have used the "add your reply" box and only clicked on a name when someone has emailed me direct.

WDP stands for Wakefield Documentation Parish. You need to go to WYAS (West Yorkshire Archive Service), Wakefield to look at the original Parish Registers or microfiches whatsoever you choose. No. 32 means that it refers to Huddersfield Parish Registers and No. 30 means that it is volume 30. Hope it helps you.

Yes Paul, you're right, the only marriage records pre-1837 are the records written at the parish church. These usually give the name of the parish where the couple presently live, and the names of the witnesses. Nothing more.

The only time I have seen a father mentioned, is when the daughter was under-age and needed her father's permission to marry.

Also Paul, don't take the message under Reggie's post as being aimed at you personally. It's what he has at the bottom of all his posts. E.g. The same as Helen, in the above post, has Researching Clay etc.

Thank you Christopher, most helpful and also thanks ChristinaS. In fact all the info has been some help to a 70 yr old with no previous experience of this though I guess I should have picked up on pre and post 1837 information.

thanks again

Just a thought, but if only witnesses shown on marriage records pre 1837 the only way of finding parents must be via birth records which presumably even pre 1837 still show parents??

Paul

Christopher Report 1 Apr 2013 02:00

No it does not always show parents, most of witnesses shown on marriage records pre 1837 are the churchwardens but sometimes bridegroom's siblings or bride's siblings shown in which they maybe give you a clue. The only way of finding parents on pre 1837 must be via baptism records in their local parish church will show parents' names.

....................... and even then, you will often find that only the father's name will be shown, especially on early records.

The mother's name, if shown, may be only the forename. The surname is commonly not shown in the Register.

Paul - it sounds to me like you've never seen any OPRs (=Old Parish Registers)

Go to
https://familysearch.org/search/collection/list#page=1®ion=UNITED_KINGDOM_IRELAND

and follow the paths (picking browse images):
England, Lancashire, Ches...rish Registers, 1603-1910 > Lancashire > Ardwick, St Thomas
England, Lancashire, Ches...rish Registers, 1603-1910 > Lancashire > Bury, St Mary

Pre-printed registers were imposed 1812ish (I've forgotten exactly) by Lord Rose's Act, although as we see at Bury, they had a pre-printed marr rego a decade earlier.

The rego for the St John's Chapel begins at
Bury, St Mary > Baptisms, burials, 1799-1809 > Image 98 of 182
so here they're recording dob, but not in the parish church - it was very much influenced by time & place and the personal preference of the minister.

EDIT As Christopher says, often the witnesses are the parish clerk, or his mates and rellies. If you get to see the original images, it's worth checking if your witnesses appear on the dosen or so adjacent entries as witnessees.

You are correct mgnv I have never seen any OPR's. Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately I have for many months had to leave my research due to family health problems, not mine thank goodness. If I get chance to eventually re-start I shall inform you of anything useful I discover. Be assured I am grateful for your help which has been very useful and eye-opening.
