Nicola Report 28 Mar 2013 09:48

Im trying to trace any relations of Donald V Lowe. He was born 29th dec 1924, in birmingham. I believe his family lived in the west bromwich area of birmingham. His dad was called George V Lowe, and his mother Esther Lowe nee George. My grandad served in the navy, on the Newfoundland, but im unable to find any docs relating to him actually being on the ship. We also believe his parents moved to Australia, with his sister(s). Donald married my nan Ivy Lowe in 1949, and he sadly passed away n 1971. Would love to hear off anyone who may be related.

Welcome to the boards Nicola.

His Naval records for WW2 would still be with the MOD. This link tells you how to obtain a copy - free if his widow applies, or £30 otherwise

https://www.gov.uk/requests-for-personal-data-and-service-records

Use http://www.freebmd.org.uk/ (or GR if you have that level of sub) to look for names of any siblings, entering Lowe as the surname and George as the mother maiden name. Use a wide year range, based on his parents marriage year.

If you don't know the year, look for it on freeBMD/GR. FreeBMD is what is says on the tin - Free!

Use the Search all trees function on this site (found under the Search button at the top of the page) to see if anyone else has the same names as you in their tree. Then you can send them a message. Try not to use the default 'May I see your tree' message as many people want more information before they do that, and may even not reply.

Hi Nicola and welcome to the boards.

No that is the volume and page number.

As in.........Vol 6b page 1419

Handy for when you want to purchace copies of certificates.

You had 6 weeks to record a birth.......so even though Donald was born in Dec1924 his birth was not registered until the beginning of 1925.

1419 is the page in the GRO index

Look at the record on freebmd to understand how the system operates

My god, your blowing my mind lol. All i had to start with was my grandad ( donald v lowe) his age, whenhe died and the fact he served in hms newfondland. I was told he lied about his age, so he could serve. I found esthers maiden name off docs for donalds birth reg, so used her maiden name and the surname lowe, to findntheir marriage details. And thats as far as ive been able to go. Rootgatherer, do you think those details are connect to donalds dad as you havent listed donald? Im sorry if i sound think, and cant thank young guys enough.mthis is something that should have been done, whilst my nan ( donalds wife ) was a live. Xx

No you're not thick Nicola - just a learner as we all were once upon a time.

Donald is not listed as one of George's children on the Military records as that information was recorded before Donald was born.

It looks like Hilda and William emigrated sometime after the second world war but I haven't found any records of that yet. Still looking.
