The birth registers show that Lilian Maud Pitman was the daughter of Charles Thomas Pitman and Elizabeth Dwyer.

Denis Pitman was Lilian's son, there is no father named on the certificate.

Basil, the tree on Ancestry has a lot of detailed information. If you're not a member of ancestry then you can search and view public Ancestry trees on their sister site, Mundia. You can also contact the tree owners, would be worth doing in this case as they might know about Lilian Maud.

You have to register but it's free. http://www.mundia.com/gb/

No my tree is on this site not Ancestry.

jerseylily.
If the I D card's usually show maiden name does this mean that Lilian Maud is the daughter of Charles Thomas and Elizabeth Pitman and that Denis her son is illegitmate?. I must try to find the birth for Denis so that i can get a certificate.

jerseylily

jerseylily Report 30 Mar 2013 14:42

Just had a thought re the ID cards - they usually show the maiden name as in,

Registration Card of Ada Jane Le Cocq, née Michel, of 9, Ingouville Place, St Helier, born 30/09/1888 (D/S/A/4/A2573)

so it's likely that Lilian was unmarried.

Children were usually added to the father's ID card. They were only included on the mother's cards if the child was illegitimate or if the father was not on the island, probably in the armed forces.

According to a tree on Ancestry Charles William married a Rosa Zugmaier in st Heleier in 1939, Cyril married Hilda Florence Stansfield in 1938. No details of who George married.

MarieCeleste Report 30 Mar 2013 09:25

Based on my theory above, the 1911 shows Charles Thomas had two other sons of an age to be married by 1933:

PITMAN, Charles Thomas Head Married M 33 1878 Blacksmith (Coachworks) Jersey St Heliers
PITMAN, Elizabeth Wife Married 9 years F 29 1882 Lancashire England

PITMAN, Doris Daughter Single F 3 1908 Lancashire England
PITMAN, Charles William Son Single M 2 1909 Jersey St Heliers

EDIT: There were actually three other children born and died according to baptisms and deaths

I don't know much about ID cards but would think if a child was added to a woman's ID card then would that mean that it was her child? If so she may well have been a married woman and Pitman was not her maiden name.

Could she have been a daughter-in-law of Charles Thomas Pitman?

There are lots of Pitmans in Jersey. Are you just assuming that she's related because she has the same surname or do you know for sure?

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 29 Mar 2013 22:28

How could you give an exact DOB if you now think she was born 20 years earlier?

Where and how did you come across the woman's name?

Where was your father born?

From the National Archives site

There are no birth, marriage or death records for the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man available to see online.

What records can I find at The National Archives at Kew?
The National Archives does not hold any birth certificates or parish baptism records for the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man.
What records can I find in other archives and organisations?
Channel Islands: Civil and parish registers
Visit the Priaulx Library for civil records for Guernsey from 1840, Alderney from 1850, and for parish registers for the Bailiwick of Guernsey (c1570-present), and the Jersey Heritage Research Centre for indexes to civil and parish registers for Jersey.

search the FamilySearch catalogue for microfilm copies of records for the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man, which can be ordered for viewing at FamilySearch Centres worldwide.

So if Lillian lived all her life on the Channel Islands then you would need to the local records offices

She doesn't show in her full name on the records

Penny Report 29 Mar 2013 18:33

How have you come across her?

Presumably you are not sure if she was born Pitman or married into the family.

I guess we need to know some more about your father - who where and when
