I would guess the Toitz family changed their name around the time of WW2. Perhaps they were Jewish. Or at least didn't want to sound foreign, possibly German.

There's only one little niggle with this, argyllgran: Emily A Adkin, and Emily E Adkin could conceivably be the same person I suppose? Anyone any thoughts on that?

Otherwise it all hangs together nicely, very many thanks!

And Prickles, thanks for the additional background, it was all relevant.

Emily Elsie is the only Emily Adkin born in Hackney between 1890 and 1895 (per FreeBMD).

Births Sep 1893 (>99%)
Adkin Emily Elsie Hackney 1b 578

In the 1901 census posted by PricklyHolly on page 2, Emily A Adkin's place of birth is given as Bethnal Green, but Free BMD has no Emily Adkin born there between 1890 and 1895.

In 1911 she listed as born in Hackney.

Therefore I think it's safe to assume Emily Elsie is our woman.

Since the above sequence of messages, I have found out a little more. I'm posting it here to help any other researchers if / when they stumble across this discussion. For some of what follows I am grateful to an Ancestry member who kindly shared her research.

In and around the 1940s the Toitz children changed their names to Toye, Doreen's case is reported in London Gazette entries 19 December 1939 and 23 January 1940. Whether this was to anglicise their name due to anti German feelings or for other reasons is not clear. Anecdotal evidence suggests that Doreen's father had another wife in Germany, I have yet to find any evidence of this but it was discovered by a relation researching the family more than 15 years ago, he is regrettably no longer alive.

Jack Toitz sounds to have been a bit of a rascal. His "real" name was Isidore, but used John and Jack among other things, and wasn't above adopting other family names! He was a toymaker and went bankrupt a number of times (3?), moving on to start another company somewhere else.

Isidore's father was Abraham, AKA Alfred and may also have used the name Samuel. The family were Polish / Russian Jews who arrived in the UK towards the end of the 1800s, possibly originally from Minsk. I have no idea whether it is possible to research such records. I've found a naturalisation record for a Samuel Toitz dated 1898 but I have no evidence that this refers to the same family.

Obviously I'd be delighted if anyone can add further to this but the main purpose was to "round off" the thread for the benefit of others.

Amanda,

Amanda, Report 30 Jul 2015 22:16

Hi Keith,

How interesting, Samuel's papers are on Ancestry but Abraham's are 1913 which have not been loaded, 1912 seems to be the cut off point, wondering if they might be brothers?

Will send you Samuel's as they show his parents.

Kind regards
Amanda

KeithG Report 31 Jul 2015 05:54

Hi Amanda

Please can you say how you know Abraham's papers are from 1913? I was wondering why I could not find anything. I was also wondering whether they were brothers, for the moment that's what I'm assuming but I'd prefer some hard evidence. Abraham's naturalisation papers would probably provide that. Do you suppose it's just a matter of "they haven't been loaded yet" and if we wait a while they will appear, or might there be some reason, a 105 year rule for example?

Keith

Hi Chris!!

Yes, that first item in the National Archives Discovery search is a family historian's nightmare. Isidore with a string of AKAs, where do you start?

"TOITZ, I aka TOITZ, J aka TOITZE aka WHITE, A aka WILSON, H T aka WILSON D E Year of birth 1891"

On top of which the article is locked for 100 years!!

As I said, Isidore was a bit of a rascal, apparently. Apart from multiple aliases, and multiple bankruptcies, it's thought he had multiple concurrent wives too - although I've only anecdotal evidence so far for that last claim.

But one of those newspaper clippings has confirmed something for me. I have the naturalisation papers for Samuel Toitz but could find nothing about Abraham Toitz, Isidore's father. I had heard, but without substantiation, that Abraham's naturalisation was in 1913, the 1925 quote seems to support that. And your Discovery search has turned up the naturalisation certificate for Abraham!

You seem to be able to make much better use of the newspaper archives than I do, Chris. I took out an introductory subscription for a month a while back and all I found was gibberish, caused by very poor OCR of the pages and a limited search implementation. So I cancelled my subscription. Looks as if I need to try again and persevere!

Thanks again Chris!

We now have two families with the family name Toitz, one Abraham the other Samuel. From their naturalisation papers they have different parents and are therefore not brothers (which would have made life easier!). Both were Jewish, born in Minsk.

I'm told that they have some films for Minsk at the LDS (thanks Amanda) but that these are likely to be in Russian or Polish, neither of which I speak, and of course I have no idea if they have the relevant records. Might anyone be able to help with this please?

I understand that there are four synagogues in Minsk, they might be able to help perhaps, but again language is likely to make that difficult.

And I'd welcome other ideas for finding (and reading!) records relating to Minsk.
