Jacqui Report 1 Apr 2013 20:18

Hi, I am trying to ascertain the parentage of my Great Grandmother - Mary Ann Amy Griffiths b. 20.4.1892. Birth certificate states Henry and Amy (nee Jermyn) Griffiths who at the time of registering the birth (June 1892) were living at 57 King Street, Cornwall Road, Lambeth (Waterloo First sub district).

However, Baptismal records from St John's, Waterloo Road, Lambeth in May 1892 show a Mary Ann Amy Griffiths b. 20.4.1892 with parents as John and Alice living at 41 King Street.

I know that Mary Ann Amy obviously wont show up on the previous years census but I am hoping to ascertain if there were two Griffiths' families living within such close proximity and this being the case the likelihood of two Mary Ann Amy Griffiths being born on the same date within probably 100 yards of each other.

I'd be really grateful for any help or advice as after 10 years of searching for Mary Ann's parentage I am still very :-S

Many thanks
Jax

When did Henry and Amy marry ?

Have you found any other baptisms

What was Henry's occupation on the original birth certificate?

For ref

London, England, Births and Baptisms, 1813-1906
about Mary Ann Amy Griffiths
Name: Mary Ann Amy Griffiths
Record Type: Baptism
Baptism Date: 15 May 1892
Father's Name: John Griffiths
Mother's name: Alice Griffiths
Parish or Poor Law Union: Lambeth St John the Evangelist
Borough: Lambeth
Register Type: Parish Registers

Looking at the register, the poor curate did nine baptisms on the same day. Another child had parents John and Alice as well, and I wonder if he made an error writing his register up after a very long day.

what is the occupation of father on it ?

Flip

Flip Report 1 Apr 2013 20:44

Who did she name as her father on her marriage?

Jacqui

Jacqui Report 1 Apr 2013 20:46

GB - yes trying to ascertain the parentage - as I have two different sets of names - Henry and Amy on birth cert and John and Alice on baptismal recs. Cant find marriage ???
Thanks for the Wm Griffiths info - may well try and get a copy of that certificate.

Flip - On birth certificate fathers occupation was a general carman.

Andrew - Yes thats the baptismal record for her, or so I believe, and yes I noted the amount of baptisms done that day and am trying to establish the parentage which I think was wrongly recorded by an overworked curate! Hence the look up request for 1891

Anyone with access to the 1891 census?

Her parents are on 1891 with a grandson Richard Chambers.

Struggling with 1891 at the moment

Jacqui

Jacqui Report 1 Apr 2013 20:49

Mary Ann's marriage certificate in 1909 notes father as Henry - occupation a Waterside labourer.

GB I thought seeing as I couldnt find the marriage that the Amy Jermyn b 1865 was possible but I am told unlikely due to the baptismal record - which I need to clarify ? wrong parents noted as lots of baptisms done that day

Jacqui

Jacqui Report 1 Apr 2013 20:50

Flip - yes thats definitely her marriage record

Flip

Flip Report 1 Apr 2013 21:17

I would be inclined to believe the birth and marriage certificate - and put the christening down to the curate's mistake. Not sure if relevant, but the christening record had father down as Scravenger.

Like GlitterBaby, I can't see any of them in 1891 either. Could do with a FMP address search to see if either address had Griffiths families living there.

Jacqui Report 1 Apr 2013 21:21

GB Is there a free search on baptismal records for the birth of William Griffiths that you posted earlier - Just wondering which church it was from? I'll happily trawl through to find any other Griffiths births with Henry and Amy as parents.

Flip

Flip Report 1 Apr 2013 21:35

The record posted was for births in the Lambeth Workhouse - William, born to Henry and Amy Griffiths. It was not a christening record so far as I can see.

Added, I've looked on Ancestry and can't see another birth or christening for any other child to Henry and Amy Griffiths.
