Karen Report 1 Apr 2013 20:32

Im trying to find relatives of my grandad George Dickinson born approx 1890 who lived in the Barrow in Furness area. He had a brother Bill ( William) who went to live in the US. Bill married and had 2 children ( a boy and a girl I think) and later divorced and returned to Barrow for a short while before returning to the States. Bill's children came to barrow to look for him but I think they were unsuccessful. The must now be in their 70's/80's. My grandad George was married to Elsie Holmes who had a sister and two brothers( Phoebe, Fred and Harry). I believe that Bill's daughter may have worked in the laundry in barrow while she as looking for her father.
UPDATE
SInce this posting I have discovered that Bill might have been in Canada prior to going to the US. I have found a US immigration record that stated he arrived in Quebec in Nov 1919 and went to the US in 1929. This means his marriage ( and possibly children) were in Canada. On the immigration record it said he had a wife in Belfast ( don't know whether thats Belfast Ireland or Belfast Ontario) but there was no mention of children.
I also have another mystery I cannot solve. It appears Bill and my grandfather George had an older sister Margaret Elizabeth who I didn't know about. Her birth record in 1886 in Barrow in Furness gives her name as Margaret Elizabeth D Watson ( Watson being her mothers maiden name, her parents not marrying until 1888). She next appears in the 1911 census as living in Barrow ( but I know the family had spent some time living in Greenwich London) with her 2 brothers Bill and George and 2 children, Charles Alfred born in Greenwich and Ethel May born in Barrow. It gives her as married and her surname as Weston but there is no record of her husband. Margaret and her children then seem to disappear off the face of the earth. I suppose it is possible they emigrated and I wonder if thats why Bill left the uk as well. Any help would be gratefully appreciated as I have tried for years to find these missing links

A big thank you to all who found this info for me so quickly. Yes it appears that Margarets children Charles and Ethel were incorrectly named as DIckinson on the 1911 census when they should have been Weston. I have found that Agnes died aged about 1. I still can't find any marriage details for Margaret ( I guess it could be in Greenwich where Charles was born). Mr Weston Snr remains elusive as does what happens to Margaret and the children after 1911. William James DIckinson also became a mystery ( after he went to Canada/US) and what happened to his supposed wife/ children that family rumours said he abandoned. Thanks again

I think there's a transcription error here - this entry appears in the GRO index as:
Births Sep 1888 (>99%)
DICKINSON Agnes Annabella Barrow F. 8e 856
i.e., with a mid-name of Annabella - same as is used in her other entry:

Has anyone got access to records that would give the name of the father of Charles Alfred Weston born 1904 Greenwich and his sister Ethel May Weston born 1907 Barrow in Furness. The childrens mother was Margaret Elizabeth Dickinson ( she also used the surname Watson)who was born in Lindal. I can only find records of Margaret and the 2 children up to 1911 but no records of the childrens father. After 1911 they all seem to disappear without trace.

Karen, could you give some further info on the immigration record for William James Dickinson that you refer to? Where was he arriving - was it actually in 1929?

Just a chance that if we can follow him up it may give some clues about Margaret.

EDIT: OK - found it, it was 1928

LINDALE, a chapelry, in the township of Upper Allithwaite, parish of Cartmel, union of Ulverston, hundred of Lonsdale north of the Sands, N. division of Lancashire, 10 miles (W. by S.) from Milnthorpe...
[Lewis http://www.british-history.ac.uk/source.aspx?pubid=445 ]
so I would expect Margt E's birth is rego'ed in Cartmel subdistrict of Ulveerston RD.
The 1837 RDs were based on the poor law unions of the time, and we know Lindale was in Ulverston. Unfortunately, CumbriaBMD haven't transcribed Cartmel yet.
1911 says she's marr for 4 y; 2 live births; 2 still living.

Another big thank you to marieceleste and mgnv for your replies. This side of my family have been a mysterious lot, it would appear there were a couple of black sheep ( William and Margaret) who were not talked about. Margaret in particular was never mentioned even though my granddad, George Thomas had lived with her in Barrow as a young man. It was only when I was researching that I discovered her existence. I would love to know what happened to Charles and Ethel Watson and also Williams supposed 2 children who I presume ended up in Belfast with their mother
