Sinead Report 1 Apr 2013 20:43

My grandma is trying to find information on her family

i've done research to the best of my ability so far but have got a little stumped

John Donoughue married Ellen Nestor

Ellen had 5 siblings
James
Kathryn
Jeremiah
Bridget
Padre?

John Donoughue and Ellen Nestor had 3 children, and Ellen died in childbirth with baby Ellen

Kathleen - 1922,
Mary - 1924 (my great grandma)
and
Ellen - 1926 (known as Eileen)

So basically I'd like to find out more about them both

with Donoughue, my gran seems to think with the name hes from Ireland and came to Liverpool, but as with a lot of things with my family tree things arent unfolding as we thought lol

any help would be much appreciated :)

Hello Sinead, you mention Ireland and Liverpool but it looks like they married Huddersfield way:

England & Wales, Marriage Index, 1916-2005

Name: John Donoughe
Spouse : Ellen Nestor
Date of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep 1920
Registration district: Huddersfield
Inferred County: Yorkshire West Riding
Volume Number: 9a
Page Number: 1023

Buying a copy of their marriage certificate should tell you who their fathers were.

Sinead, which sites are you using for your research?

FreeBMD is good for looking up births, marriages and deaths http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl

To order copies of certificates use GRO http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/

The Nestors originated in Ireland but perhaps a bit longer ago than you thought?

MarieCeleste Report 1 Apr 2013 22:24

A possible for James & Cecelia's marriage:

Ireland, Civil Registration Marriages Index, 1845-1958

Name: James Nestor
Date of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec 1891
Registration district: Clifden
Volume: 4
Page Number: 65
FHL Film Number: 101256

Records on Page:
Name
James Nestor
Celia M'Garry

You'd really need to order one of the children's birth certificates to check the mother's maiden name.

EDIT: If you go onto FreeBMD you'll find two births in Huddersfield in the name of Nestor with mother's maiden name McGarry so it looks a good possibility. The names of those children tie in with what you know.

Memorial YPRES (MENIN GATE) MEMORIAL

Additional Information:

Sinead, not many of us use GR as a sole means of research.

There are some good free sites - make sure you bookmark FreeBMD that I posted the link to above.

FamilySearch is a must use site, again it's free https://familysearch.org

Here's a link to James Nestor's 1891 marriage from that site
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FY4L-Q36

You can also access some census information for free.

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 2 Apr 2013 19:15

I'm blowed if I can find the Nestors anywhere in 1901, have tried several sites, and Irish census.

Can fresh eyes find them?

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 2 Apr 2013 19:24

There's a public tree on Ancestry that has quite a bit of information about Nestors from Clooney parish, co Clare

They have a James Nestor b1866 Clare but no further information on what happened to him. The parents were John Nestor and Bridget Donohue. Amongst the siblings was a Jeremiah (one of James and Cecelia's boys is so called), also a Patrick and a Mary - having said that, they're not unusual names.

They have a variety of stories and pictures, including the family house.

You can search and view public Ancestry trees for free on their spin-off site, Mundia. You can also contact tree owners. You have to register but it costs nothing.

Sinead - does your gran have any recollection of when/where John Donoughe may have died? We could then find his death to establish when he was born and see what we can trace.

Hi Sinead - have you ordered the marriage certificate? I think you're going to need that to get any further with him.
