Regarding Stephen Sprules: I will have to put who his parents were on the backburner for a while... because not sure about the 'base born' thing. It could be that his parents were unmarried, and Elizabeth Sprules gave her children her surname, the father of Stephen was someone with the surname: Hains ? I'm not 100% sure, so until I come across further evidence I'm at a brick wall! Need someone who has deeper knowledge on this. The Sprules connection is still there, however, perhaps not through the father's side.

The first thread was for: Stephen Sprules and Ann Davis. The second was to ask for any family members out there... with a link to my family from Wiltshire. I play by the sprules.

So, Stephen Sprules parents were: Elizabeth Sprules, father could have had the surname: Hains. She decided to give Stephen her surname, rather that her partner, she was probably unmarried. Anyway, something like that, I think. However, it may also be that Elizabeth's surname was: Hains, and she gave Stephen the surname of her father which was: Sprules. Headache time... lol :-( :-D ;-)

G007 Report 7 Jul 2013 23:00

It could be I have the Hains surname family connection, and NOT Sprules apart from Elizabeth's. I could be climbing up the wrong tree here... lol Need to keep an open mind about ALL this... a case of not 100% sure!

G007 Report 7 Jul 2013 22:58

So, just to finish up on this for a while... It could be that Elizabeth surname was: Sprules, she gave her name to her children, and the father's surname may have been Hains. I know your not S.Holmes, but your not that far away... lol very HOT tonight! Terrible!!! Good news about A.Murray! :-D

There is this baptism for an Elizabeth Sprules in the area, but I have no way of knowing if she is the same Elizabeth who was mother to Stephen Sprules/Hains or to James Sprowles:

As I previously posted on this thread, an Elizabeth Sprowles had a base born son baptised a few years later.

Day: 26
Month: May
Year: 1811
Forenames: James
Surname: Sprowles
Fathers forenames:
Occupation:
Mothers forenames: Elizabeth
Birth day:
Birth month:
Birth year:
Abode:
Place: Overton & Fyfield
Description:
County: Wiltshire
Country: England
Notes: base born
Record source: Wiltshire Baptisms (pre-1852)

IF he is Stephens's brother, as seems not unlikely, then Sprules would appear to be the name of their mother Elizabeth.

So Hains MIGHT,just MIGHT be an indication of the name of Stephen's father. However I am not Sherlock Holmes.

G007 Report 7 Jul 2013 22:20

I need a bit of S.Holmes here... but if the info is not around, it's dead end time! :-(

G007

G007 Report 7 Jul 2013 22:18

Surely he would not have gave his children the surname: Sprules, if that was not his real surname.

G007

G007 Report 7 Jul 2013 22:16

I think I need a bit more searching around... however, if that is all you could find... not much else to go on... brick wall time! lol

Ok thanks K, I thought it was Elizabeth, and father's surname must have been: Sprules, can't understand the Hains part ? Bit strange this.

His mother was Elizabeth as I posted on page 1 of this thread.

His father is unknown, unless the alias 'Hains' is a clue.

I've got a bit lost with my understanding here, I think. Stephen Sprules was 'baseborn', so not sure who is parents were ?

G007

G007 Report 7 Jul 2013 21:53

Ok thanks for this info Kucinta.

Kucinta

Kucinta Report 7 Jul 2013 19:36

In this context, baseborn is another word for illegitimate.

G007

G007 Report 24 Jun 2013 15:03

What does 'baseborn' mentioned above mean ?

Thanks Kucinta, this Hains link is interesting. A woman with the surname: Sprules used to sell Lavender oils to Queen Victoria, interesting.
