Thank you Potty for your continued help. I will have a look at the ones on Ancestry but as you say it will be difficult without knowing which Regiment he was in.

Kind regards

There are a couple of Herbert Bennetts in the Army on the 1911 census but none agree age of POB wise.

His WW1 Army record does not seem to be on Ancestry but there are several medal cards for Herbert A Bennett - you would need to know his regiment to find the correct one.

As it looks as if he was still serving in the 1920s, I think his Army record would still be with the MOD but only the next of kin can apply.

Thank you Potty, have just checked that and I do believe it's not him but thank you for your time.

Sorry, Kathryn, have just realised I posted the census for Brown and not Bennet.

The Irish 1911 census is free on this site.

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/

this is the nearest I can find:

Bennett H S H Portobello Barracks Rathmines & Rathgar West Dublin 19 M

There are a lot of images to go through to find him - he is on p37 but the age and initials are wrong.

Thank you all for the further information it is much appreciated. I do not have full subs for any of the sites. I only have the general sub for Ancestry and of course for GR so there is a lot I cannot research or at least view. Am going to post a message on Ancestry for the birth of Herbert Jnr in India and will let you all know if I find anything on him. Dorthy is still a mystery though. Have just searched on Free BMD through various years but cannot find her birth. I know for sure she was one of the Bennett/Browne children.

Kind regards

Have just found out that Herbert's parents were Rex and Charlotte so that tallies with the 1901 Census I looked at.. I think Herbert was probably in Ireland still in 1911 albeit you have found that he married Annie in 1914 in Portsmouth.

If Herbert was in the Army in Ireland initially does anyone please know where his Army Records would be please, are they possibly somewhere online?

Kind regards

This could be the St Pancras Herbert in 1911; how sure are you that your Herbert was born there as there is another birth in the same year in Camberwell. I think you will probably need to get his marriage cert to confirm his father's name:

Hello all, thank you for the provided information. I had indeed looked on Free BMD but hadn't seen this one, I thought they probably got married in Ireland. I don't have any birth certificates for any of the children. Have only gone by what I have found researching. Am still looking for Dorothy's birth though and not sure how I would go about finding Herbert Jnrs birth in India? Well done all, I said a fresh pair of eyes or two may well help.

Kind regards

Farnham is close to Aldershot where there is big Army base. My paternal grandmother was born in Farnham and married a soldier who had been stationed in Aldershot. It does look as if Herbert was a soldier. Have you got the birth cert of one of the children born in Farnham? He may have put his regiment on the registration which would help trace where he serve.

Have you searched for a marriage in Ireland for him?

Thank you argyllgran for that information regarding Farnham, this obiously explains how some of the children were born there.

Re the Army and Farnham, per Wikipedia:

The railway arrived in 1848 and, in 1854, neighbouring Aldershot became the “Home of the British Army”.[27] Both events had a significant effect on Farnham. The fast link with London meant city businessmen could think of having a house in the country and still be in close contact with the office; Farnham thereby became an early example of a 'commuter town'. Also, the railway did not reach Aldershot until 1870; during the intervening period soldiers would be carried by train to Farnham station and then march to Aldershot.[28] Many officers and their families chose to billet in Farnham itself. The railway was electrified by the Southern Railway company in 1937 as far as Alton,[29] and a carriage shed for the new electric stock was built in Weydon Lane. This building, which carried fading camouflage paint for many years after World War II, was replaced in 2006.

Hello, I have Herbert Arthur Bennett who died 9 July 1962, Ashford, Kent. When researching his death it comes up with a 1901 Census to show he was born in St Pancras, London in 1889 so hopefully this is one in the same person. I know for sure this was his death. Herbert Arthur Bennettt maries an Annie Grace Browne (this could be spelt without the e). I cannot find a marriage for them. Now, Herbert Arthur Bennett I know for sure was British. Annie was born in Ireland on 19 September 1884. The two of them for sure were in Cork in 1908 as they were both witnesses at my grandmothers wedding but at the time Annie's surname is still Browne. I know for sure they had five children. Dorothy, Herbert, Patricia, Eileen and Stella May. I cannot find a birth for Dorothy and also I have been informed that Herbert Jnr was born in India. Patricia and Eileen were twins and born in Farnham, Surrey in 1921. Stella May was born in Farnham in 1922. Now I have also been told that in or around 1924 Herbert Arthur, Annie and the rest of the family went to Indica. Herbert Arthur was apparently in the Army. I have tried to trace an Army Record for him but to no avail. I have come across an Arthur Herbert Bennett but am not convinced this is one in the same person. I have also looked at outgoing and incoming passenger lists for the family but have found nothing. Perhaps a fresh pair or two of eyes might assist. Albeit as he was in the Army it may well not show on the Passenger Lists. Does anyone know if there was an Army base in Farnham, Surrey please at the time Patiricia, Eileen and Stella were born?

Any help with the above queries would be much appreciated.

Kind regards

Kathryn
