Nicola what was her surname when she died?

Its not very usual for Doris to be called Dorothy or vice versa...I think this may be causing confusion?

Obviously this is just speculation without certs. but.....

There is a death for a Stella Audrey D Smith in 2001 in Kent.

And an Arthur Patrick H G Houlding in 1999 in Kent.

I know this might just be confusing things even more and it doesn't take into account the fact that the 1920 marriage to Mr. Poole was in the name of Hughes but there is this marriage:-

I wonder if this is her first husband's death? 14 years after she married her second!! Could that be the reason she called herself Hughes?

It could well be!!

Between the wars a lot of marriages broke up and the people involved just went on to either live with or marry (bigamously) another partner because divorce was almost impossible to get.

The Doris Mildred Hose baptism I posted, on the image it has the date of birth as November 3rd 1889

right I have death cert here born 4th Nov 1896 in London died 13 Dec 1976 in Weston-super-mare

That birth date on the baptism is just too close to the date on the death cert.

Did she lop a few years off her age? Of course the info on the death record is only as good as the informant's knowledge at the time.

The date of birth on a death certificate can't be taken as definitely correct as the informant might not be certain.

There is no birth of anyone called Hose that would fit with that date of birth.

The Stella and Patrick you mention would certainly seem to have the surname Houlding as the marriage of Stella and death with the surname Smith seems to confirm what you already knew of them.

I do think Hughes must be a mistake I found Houlding marriage yesterday and the children's names fit :)

The informant was her daughter Stella Smith

I think the only safe way forward is to buy the marriage cert of Ernest J Poole and see what it says as to her father's name and occupation.

Indeed I think she must have lopped a few years off :-D
