The other thing, Jonesey posted a marriage for Fanny Garrett to John Poucher in 1852, but that is an Ancestry link and could be wrong. I haven't checked for them yet though.

Yes, that's the other John I saw Chris. Although their marriage doesn't appear to be in the parish registers either, I wondered if he was more likely to be George's son. That one died Pateley Bridge I think.

Wonder if the John we are looking for was illegitimate and invented father John?? Could be with mother but under another name if she married.

There doesn't seem to be any reason for him to lie about his father, unless he didn't actually know him. The one on the various census doesn't really add up - George is still alive (a widow) in 1901 living with son Sam Poucher.

There are obviously 2 John Poucher's in Yorkshire, because there is another death (1937) for one the same age as the one we've been looking for, but Rodney has his John dying in 1912.

First wife was Wright, wonder if there is any significance that one of the witnesses on the second marriage was A W Wright?

Added: When Sam was christened it gave father's name as George/mother Fanny, unfortunately his marriage to Ellen Stead in 1889 doesn't appear in the parish registers. Tried older child Richard, but think he may have died in 1883 - so no marriage for him either.

The first marriage was to Hannah Jane Wright (I think) althougn on the census she is Jane H, so this is probably her death:

Rodney,

I think you need to see the certificate for the first marriage as well as the second. If it really was a bigamous marriage, he may very well have lied about his details on the second marriage.

Interesting Could George (1871 & 1881) really be John Snr?

Marriages Jun 1852
Garratt Fanny Sleaford 7a 689
Poucher John Sleaford 7a 689

The location of the marriage would certainly fit the bill of a son born shortly thereafter in South Kyme.

do you have the 1882 marraige cert to confirm the father ?

Maddie

Rodney

Rodney Report 11 Apr 2013 14:36

Still trying to find the father/mother of this chap following an earlier attempt. He married twice, to Hannah Jane Wright in 1882 and then to Eliza Wall in 1895. One certificate gives father as also a John Poucher, stone mason's labourer, dec'd. Census shows our John born in Horsforth, Yorks., but no record anywhere of a birth in Yorks. Believe he was possibly born in Lincolnshire where most Pouchers originate, and moved to Horsforth. Appreciate help given last time but the leads didn't discover our John's parents - any more ideas?!!
Thanks,
Rodney Poucher.
