Hello everone,
My Great Uncle named above was born in Watten, Caithness. He was the 3rd son of James Sutherland (farmer) and his wife Margaret Gray. He sailed to Melbourne from Plymouth in Oct 1876 aboard the SS Northumberland and landed in Melbourne in Nov. He wrote a diary of the voyage which one my cousins is transcribing and also a letter describing how he had seen the body of Ned Kelly and other members of his gang. I seem to recollect that he pulled hairs from the tail of Ned Kelly's horse. I believe he married Lucy Neathway or Lucy Gordon. Donald appears to have died in 1888 and is buried in Waverley Cemetery in NSW. I would love to find out if there were any offspring. Perhaps I might find out why he died so relatively young.
Ooops, I'm new to the function of' 'threads' and it has just occurred to me that I might be repeating myself on the same site. If I am, I do apologise to those who have given me so much help before. I did ask for GR Aus. when I started out on this thread. I have passed the info I gleaned from you all onto my cousins. I am the self-appointed genealogist in my branch of the Sutherland family!
Anyway, I'm sure if you've already helped you'll forgive me and if you did not see my original message you might have some new info.
Regards,
Marina

You will find the marriage to Lucy B Gordon in 1884 and his death in 1888 here:

http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/familyHistory/searchHistoricalRecords.htm

There don't appear to be any births of offspring registered between 1884 and 1888.

Marina. just a suggestion - if this is directly relevant to previous thread it might be better on there. You can edit heading to something like 'more help needed - Australia' so only people who can help with Aussie research will look.
Might be better to delete this thread if you decide to do that.

There is a death notice for Donald Gray Sutherland if you search the Australian newspaper site:

Thank you everyone. I'm sure I'll get better at this with a little help from community friends.

Here's the other thread

The request for help to find out it he had any children does seem to follow on from that one

It doesn't matter which GR domain you use, you still end up in the same place with the same set of records available :-)
