As the poster's surname is Gateland, then presumably it is the surname she has lost.

I put it in a search as a place, and no Gateland as a place showed in 1871 on ancestry, but it did for other years. The word 'land' made me think it would be a place, and then a stab in the dark.

I will leave just so others not misled.
