I wonder if it might have been something to do with pronunciation? I know written down the names look nothing like each other. When you think about how some people don't pronounce Ls properly the name could be spoken as Ameeya (I have a friend Amelia and have heard it said in a variety of ways). It's not as far fetched as it may seem.

If the person registering the birth wasn't literate they wouldn't know what had been written.

Hello,

I've found myself in a bit of a quandary !!!
My 2*G grandfather Joseph Millington 1829 - 1901 (Boiler maker) married Amelia Fereday 1832 - 1898 their son
My Great Grandfather William Millington b1855 d1943 married to Elizabeth Pickrell b1856 d 1922
Now this is where I'm having a problem I received William's birth certificate today and all info is what I have except it as mother as Mary Fereday?? on all the census I have found it's Amelia on the marriage I found also Amelia I have searched and did find a Mary Ann Fereday but she died in 1851
All born in Staffordshire

Any help please

Thank you

Mary
