Now I know this is an awful long way back but it seems strange that the name should turn up.

Do you want to go back from Thomas HIrd?

Sounds to me like his mother was a Dawson and his father a Brockbank. Only by buying his birth cert will you find out if the father was named when his birth was registered.

This happened with my gt grandfather, could follow mother who married after two children were born out of wedlock.

If his birth was the Dec quarter he won't be on the 1901 census.

As he was not born until the end of 1901 he will not show in the census.

I am researching the Hird family and just wanted to know what connection William was to the family as to have been adopted by them

Maybe a lookup on the 1901 Census may show him
