just wondering if he was telling porkies as he was living with Elizabeth in 1861 and youngest child only 7 months old, can't find a female Hack death for 1860/1861

Can't see a death for Sarah so perhaps they just put the wrong year as it's about right month, just should be 1860, perhaps miss transcribed.

Edit - Sarah is 10 in 1871 census and Mary down as Mary J.

Not unheard of for stepparents to be named on christening records.

I have 2 rellies who were born with one surname and christened with another 4 years later after a re-marriage.

Although John is recorded as a widower on 1861 census, does the marriage cert in 1863 bear this out ?

mgnv

mgnv Report 16 Apr 2013 00:54

Mike - I think you're mistaken. The purpose of a christening is to give the child their christian name(s). It has nothing to do with surnames. The typical post-1810 baptismal register has a column headed "Child's Christian Name" and a double column headed "Parents Name" which is subdivided into "Christian" and "Surname" columns. So if the entry said "John illegitimate son of" "William Smith & Mary Brown", you're left to guess what his surname is - in truth you're always left to guess, but the guess his surname is the one used by both his parents is the usual guess, and nearly always correct.

Similarly, birth certificates have no absolute connection with a child's legal name - I presume you've already concluded that (unless you know a couple of guys called Male Smith).

Thelma Report 16 Apr 2013 12:08

I cannot thank you all enough. You have found information that I could not.
Do not know how I missed that marriage to Selina in1856.
The baptisms in the name of Taylor came as a big surprise.
I will have to buy the birth cert for Mary Jane.
