I'd be delighted if someone could help me discover the background of my 4 x great grandparents Joshua and Ann Bates.

I have them in all the Censuses and have full details of all their children and descendants. What I am stuck on is their marriage and birth/baptisms.

I do know that Ann was previously Ann Clark since in 1851 and 1861 her widowed father William Clark (b. 1775) is living with the family.

In 1841 they are living at Matilda Street Sheffield with baby son Septimus born 31st August 1839.
In 1851 they are in Sheffield with four more sons and Ann's father.
In 1861 they have moved to Ecclesall Bierlow and Joshua is wrongly transcribed as Joseph.
In 1881 they are still in Ecclesall Bierlow with son John and his family.
They consistently give their place of birth as Sheffield and their dates of birth are pretty constant as being between 1816-1819.
I think Ann must have had quite a few older siblings if her father was in his late 30's /early 40's when she was born.

Many thanks to anyone who can take a look for me, I would love to go back further with these two families.

Thanks also for Joshua Bate which is another possibility though I find it a bit unusual that he didn't call any of his sons James if that was his dad's name.

Thank you for your efforts, Ann.
The Elizabeth Clark in 1861 is not the right one as she seems to have died between 1841 and 1851. I see there are two Elizabeths died in 1842 in Ecclesall, so one of them is probably her.
I have just found William and Elizabeth together in Ecclesall in the 1841 census.

I wonder if anyone can now find Joshua's marriage! :-D
Thanks
Beverley

Indeed :) I was hoping someone with access to the Ancestry collection of West Yorkshire marriages might see this.
I guess that Joshua and Ann must have married just before 1837, always assuming that Septimus was their first child and there wasn't a previous baby who died.
Thanks for your interest Ann.

Wonder if anyone on the site this morning can find this marriage in the 1830's, Sheffield/Ecclesall Bierlow?
Thanks!

How can I have missed that???
Thank you very much indeed, Christina.

Actually I never thought of looking for Bate and Bate does not turn up on Soundex while searching for BateS. :-)
That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it! :-D
