I am trying to trace my grand aunt Jane Matilda Turner b, 1888. I have only just found out that my grandmother has another sister and this is Jane M. I can find her birth - 2nd April, 1888. St. Saviour, Southwark 1d 35, but I cannot find what happened to her.

Tried to find her on the Census 1901 without luck; no marriage shows up and I cannot see a death under the Turner family.

Any ideas. I have had a previous thread (sorry tried to find the thread number) on my grandmother's brother Thomas Turner - under Thomas Turner b 1911 (his son) so there is some family information on that, but this is so new to me that it is a new thread really.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Many thanks,

Sappho

Hello from Christchurch NZ

K this is my Jane - my grandmother Johanna b. 1880 is her sister as William and Amy are their parents. Thank you.

Now why is she not with them as she was born 1888 - only 13 years. She could have been i n Service as suggested by Fredk. Thank you - did not think of that.

I have her baptism details which is what alerted me to her being a close family member, but what happened to her. Did she marry? Did she die young? I am puzzled as I have searched trees for her without much luck. 79 trees, but cannot find Jane Matilda connection.

Many, many thanks; any other ideas?

Fredk, Many thanks the second birth is my Jane Ref: 1d 35. As I have only just found out about her I will have to send for certificate - it takes about three weeks from UK to NZ so may have to wait a bit.

Trying to find out more in the meantime, might get a marriage cert to send for.

I also saw the Jane Matilda Ref 1d 115, but it does not match the born month. Date on Baptism gives birth date as 2nd April 1888 although both births are Southwark.

Would love to find someone coming forward as so far not got much further with brothers Thomas and William Turner jnr. my grandmother's brothers and Amy Turner's (sister) descendants have no idea about the rest of the family.

Help!!!

Thanks,

Sappho

I do not have access to the 1911 Census, but tht does look as though it could be my Jane. Is there any other information on Jane Matilda on the 1911 Census.

If it is her then I wonder how she came to be so far from home. My grandmother was so particular about her family - in later life she took out life insurance policies for all the family sisters, brothers and their children. I have never heard about Jane until today.

She turned up on page 64 Baptisms St. Stephens Southwark, Surrey Page 64. It was tucked in behind those on Page 46 of Johanna and Thomas. I got a bit of a shock that there was another sister called Jane.

I do wonder what happened to her.

I'm wondering if the girl in service is the daughter of George and Mary as her birthplace in 1911 is specifically Walworth where that baptism took place:

Yes, correct. You see I had trouble even finding this originally because I was looking for Johanna and see how they have spelt her name Jerema. Another time it has been Jemina. The family did not read or write - many a cross shown! My Johanna was the first to go to school and I have her school attendance record.

Meanwhile, we do not have Jane Matilda - I am so puzzled. Unless we can turn up anything I might just have to send for that birth cert to see if I am on the right track. It is funny because I was suspicious as to why there was such a gap between children as my Johann being the eldest child born 1880, then the gaps which was not usual.

So elusive Jane - where are you?

Thank you as always for your help - any other places I could look. I wonder as she may have married out of London but I cannot find a link to her in Marriages and Deaths.

Hi Marie Celeste,

Just checking something - back in a minute!

Ru

Ru Report 25 Apr 2013 08:32

So we have two births Jane Matilda Turner born 1888. I have established one and eliminated the other.

The one that is probably my Jane M Turner is 1d. 35 as the months match that of the Baptism date entered officially. The other birth in Southwark also is 1d 115 is for the Oct/Nov/Dec period and is not my Jane in all porbablity.

Does this help at all.

If she is the young woman in service (which makes sense) what happened to her after that. I am very surprised we have no knowledge of her in the family and my mother never mentioned her.

Can you help me what are the Reference numbers given - to what do they refer and is that something I can connect to?

Year of Marriage 1901
Quarter of Marriage Jan-Feb-Mar
Registration District Bolton
Registration County Lancashire
Spouse's Surname Only available for records after 1912

Possibly married John William Howorth - it may be a connection I am not sure. Just checking it a bit further. Do you think a bit far stretched to connect.
