I'm trying to find my 2xgreat & 3xgreat grandfathers. A cousin (unfortunately no longer with us) did a lot of family history before the days of the Internet, and found these 2 men, both drowned, but I don't know where she found the information, or what information she found to support their deaths. I can't find them on the death indexes, as I don't know whether they would be registered.
William was baptised in Melcombe Regis, Dorset & married (15 Aug 1807) Elizabeth Bolt. They had 7 children, John was their 1st son. He apparently drowned off South Foreland, Kent. He had married Frances or Fanny Elmes on 30 Sep 1835. They had 4 children.
They all lived in the Weymouth, Dorset area.
Family rumour has it that one or both of them might have been involved in smuggling or even wrecking?
William was possibly Master of the ship 'Alliance' & John might have had something to do with a ship 'Jane', but again I have no evidence for any of this information!
I would be very, very grateful for any guidance on how I could proceed with finding out about these 2 men - Thank you in anticipation.

Just looked on FMP Ttinity House Calendars.. Petition
Elizabeth 34 widow of William Weymouth 1820

About the Trinity House CalendarsThese records are printed indexes to the Trinity House Papers, which are held by the Society of Genealogists and are a very rich source of genealogical information.

Covering the period 1787 to 1854, most of the papers are Petitions for aid, submitted by the seaman or, often, his widow. The Petitions contain a wealth of family information, about the seaman and his dependents. Other papers include Apprenticeship Indentures of seamen, and a collection of Miscellaneous Papers, consisting mainly of marriage and baptismal certificates. The papers cover families from all over the United Kingdom.

If you find an ancestor listed in the Trinity House Calendars, you can order copies of the original papers from the Society of Genealogists' online shop
