What happened to my great, great grandfather?

Justine Report 27 Apr 2013 12:02

Can someone please help me!
According to an article that my father found about my great, great grandmother (Mary Williams), My great great grandfather Daniel Williams was appointed station master at Ely (Cardiff) in1867 and was killed on the railways in 1876. Leaving a wife and 7 children. (How and when, did he die?)
I have found them in the 1871 census, with 4 children.
In the 1881 census I've found Mary with her 7 children, but the youngest Ethel is only 1.
In the 1891 Census Mary, now re married, still lists Ethel as being born in 1880. I'm really confused and would like some help or guidence to solve this mystery!

Might this match for age? If so, might be worth taking a chance and getting the cert:

I would think it most likely that Ethel was the daughter of Daniel Williams. I have found a newspaper article relating to his death in December 1878.

Ethel's birth was registered in the last quarter of 1879. so she could have been born any time from August 1879.

I'll type out the article.

Found on FMP -

Birmingham Daily Post - 23rd December 1878

'Daniel Williams, Station Master at Ely, near Cardiff, on the Great Western Railway, was knocked down on Friday and killed in the fog by an up parcel train going at the rate of 30 miles an hour. The body was carried in the works of the engine for 40 yards and was frightfully disfigured. Deceased had been attending to a down train and was crossing the line when the occurrence took place'

(NOTE: 23rd December 1878 was a Monday, so the death occurred on Friday, 20th December 1878)

EDIT - sorry Christina - looks like we found it about the same time

Christina(Lancashire) Report 27 Apr 2013 13:29

An inquest was opened yesterday in Cardiff concerning the accidental deaths of two men during a fog in the neighbourhood of the town. In one case the Station Master at Ely, on the Great Western Railway, was killed by a special parcels train........

It doesn't mention his name.

The article is dated Tuesday 24th December 1878.

From the 19th Century British Library Newspapers collection.

Looks like the first of the 2 deaths above is likely to be him - but with that info from the article you don't really need the cert do you!
How tragic for him & his family.

Snap Choccy. :-)

Found another article under the page heading 'Afghan War 'of all things.

This contains even more information, to be honest it makes quite distressing reading.
