Hello - I'm trying to find more on my great grandmother, Sarah Jane White or rather her mother's side of the family.

My great grandmother was born in 1874 in Haydensbent, Shropshire and died in 1957. She married my great grandfather William Tew (born 1871) in Cheltenham. They had three children Charles, William and my grandmother Minnie Jannetta and lived in South Wales.

Her mother was apparently called Ann White b. 1850 and married Joseph Bailey b. 1850. I believe that Ann White may have married 4 times so am particularly interested in finding out about her, but also about Joseph Bailey's heritage.

You say her mother was APPARTENTLY Ann White
You probably need to start by bying her birth certificate to get some facts.

Although if she had been born in 1850 she would have been too young.....How do you know she was born about 1850?

Sarah Jane's mother was indeed Ann White and she married a Joseph Bailey. I think, however, that Ann White was married four times as I was always told that my great great grandmother (Grandma Grimes was Sarah Jane's mother). Firstly to a Mr White, then presumably to Joseph Bailey, then to a Mr Black and finally to a Mr Grimes. She wasn't a black widow though - she outlived the first three and died six months before the last one. It looks like my great grandmother was the child of Ann White's first marriage, not the one to Joseph Bailey who must have been her second husband. I need to find Ann White's maiden name somehow - any suggestions as I'm quite new to all of this.

According to the 1911 census (which is the correct record as my grandmother Minnie lived at the address shown after her parents died and I also lived there until I was three years old), Sarah Jane was then 38 (she married William Tew), so she would have been born c. 1872. If Ann White was born in 1850, she would have been 22 when she had my great grandmother. It would have been quite acceptable for her mother, Ann White to have been born in 1850 and this information came from my great aunt who researched family history by going round the various parish registers.

The marriage of William Tew in Cardiff 1890 is the right one I believe because of where it is registered and it fits in with their ages.

I missed the point about Joseph Bailey's marriage to Ann White - he obviously could not have married her the same year she was born. I need to look at my information again and check if I've made a mistake here.

Getting a birth certificate for Sarah jane should give you her mothers maiden name...
