NS ..................

I wonder if a confectioner's business was considered a "suitable" shop for a single lady to run??

One of my OH's ancestral lines is of reasonably wealthy tenant farmers in Westmorland and Yorkshire. In one large family, I eventually found 2 of the girls as confectioners in Liverpool.

There seems to have been no previous connection with business of any kind ............ at least I haven't found one.

Yet they later had at least 3 nieces as apprentices. Neither woman married.

CupCakes Report 4 May 2013 07:17

There is no issue about my parental Robinsons. I have all info certs etc about them all. I found some probates and sent for the wills of my dad, grandpa and greatgranpa. My granpa Charles Robinson was a tailor with a shop. He was one of those who copied the designs of the so called affluent people and produced made to measure at a cheaper cost.

He died suddenly 1 Jan 1944 after an operation. My siblings and my 2 cuz all rmember going to visit nan at her sweet shop in the early 50's - such a magical place for small children. It was in Middleton on the corner of a road near the old market.

There is no historic connection with a confectionary business in the family. So how she came about it we have no idea - she lived at 7 North Road, Salford for years before then - the address is even on my dads WW11 records.

Amelia & Joseph Roscoe are not blood relations but seem to be tied up with the family in some way. Especially Amelia, however with Amelia & nana both widows they must have made a living somehow.

Have just reread grandpas will. Just noticed it was originally written 4 Jan 1928 - refiled 30 Jan 1938. So the time frame of Amelia and nana's asociation is at least from 1928 - 1944

don't know why it didn't show up on freebmd for me .................. I found it easily enough by looking for the place, and volume and page numbers!!!

Deaths Dec 1923 (>99%)

RUSCOE Joseph H 40 Salford 8d 143

He died very young!

I wonder if he served in WW1???

SylviaInCanada Report 4 May 2013 06:28

NS ................

I found what looks like his death registration on ancestry, but not on freebmd. I posted it on page 1 .............

Birth Date: abt 1883
Date of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec 1923
Age at Death: 40
Registration district: Salford

Charles died in 1938, so yes, his will was probably written some time in the intervening 15 years .............. is there not a date on it??

CupCakes Report 4 May 2013 06:15

Sorry for not getting back to this thread - sort of got waylaid.

This is all so very interesting - I'm quite amazed at the findings. Will have to keep all this in my family notes.
Going back to the beginning it is obvious the Joesph was dead when grandpa Charles included her in his will. I'm following the trail of addresses in Manchester

As you can see from my Researching: notes my grandmothers origin is a mystery - many have tried before. I kept all the notes I got from the offices in Manchester years ago. Only this week I finally proved her sister and linked her 3 husbands. Just waiting for the certs to see what she declared about their father. Thomas James Davies - so far I've only been able to guess anything about him.

SylviaInCanada Report 3 May 2013 23:14

wonder if NanaSue will return to this thread?

I don't like to feel that I have wasted my time ............... especially when it is such an interesting story.

Gershon Kohn / Geoffrey Kent appears to have been very well thought of, especially in the US.

MarieCeleste Report 3 May 2013 23:05

I'm pretty sure too Sylvia, as referenced in that newsletter link we've both posted, seems to have been a note from his son who is also mentioned in the obit.

SylviaInCanada Report 3 May 2013 21:20

A Gershon Kohn was in the Royal Army Medical Corps in WW2, and was promoted to Lt. on 24th Mar 1945

Gershon Kohn (342691)

I'm getting convinced that Gershon Kohn (aka Geoffrey Kent) was a medical officer of the SS Bodegraven, the last Kindertransport to get Jewish children out of Holland.

The ship docked in Liverpool May 19 1940

SylviaInCanada Report 3 May 2013 21:05

then I wonder if this is him???

Contact: Andrea Goodmaker at AJR, DECEMBER 2006 Jubilee ...
Dec 8, 2006 – My father, known as Gershon Kohn then, was aboard the Bodegraven as a medical officer with his cousin, and his cousin's parents. I wished to ......

or maybe not

MarieCeleste Report 3 May 2013 20:49

He had a good innings!

Chicago Tribune

April 27, 2008

Geoffrey Kent, Professor of Pathology Emeritus at Northwestern University, has led a distinguished career in research, administration and teaching in four countries across two continents.

Graduating with an M.D. from the University of Amsterdam in 1939, he displayed a remarkable affinity for training with exceptional leaders in medical research and education.

SylviaInCanada Report 3 May 2013 20:46

MC ................

I just realised that!

Having found Katharines' obituary, which shows that Geoffrey survived her .......... after 63 years of marriage :-0

but have left it up because it rules out that Geoffrey Kent.

SylviaInCanada Report 3 May 2013 20:42

Geoffrey Kent survived her

SylviaInCanada Report 3 May 2013 20:41

Wonderful ..................

a snippet ................

Katharine Mary Kent, born Nov. 20, 1912 in Broughton, Salford Co., England to Joseph Henry Ruscoe and Amelia Anne Crossley, died at Northwest Community Healthcare Center in Arlington Heights, IL on June 27, 2007. Raised near Manchester, England, served in the hospital there through the German Blitz of December, 1940; married in 1944; and became a resident of Tent Lodge near Coniston during WWII where she had her first of four children. Later in 1949 she moved in support of her husband's medical career to Welwyn, outside of London. She emigrated with her husband, mother and four children to Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan in 1951 and three years later emigrated again to River Forest, IL, to the corner of Keystone and Chicago Ave., living there for over 15 years. Afterward she resided in Chicago, Barrington and finally in Arlington Heights, IL. After receiving vocational training in medical administration, Katharine was employed by the Manchester Royal Infirmary in Manchester, England, and later ......................

MarieCeleste Report 3 May 2013 20:40

Sylvia, I don't think that death can be him - he was still alive aged 93 in 2006.

He is mentioned on page 5 of the newsletter on this link:
