Dear MarieCeleste,
Hi, i am trying to find any possible information on a Bertha louise Cottingham.

I have a Sidney Walter Cottingham 1907 - 1973 Worthing, when he died the informant was Bertha,.

I cannot find thier marriage or a death of Bertha or a possible remarriage.

Maybe Bertha left the UK ,

Any help appreciated mfm

MfM - does the death certificate actually say she was his wife?

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 11 May 2013 09:35

Is this a first marriage for him?

Surname First name(s) Spouse District Vol Page
Marriages Dec 1931
Cottingham Sidney W Mercer W.Ashford 2a 2352
Mercer Florence C Coltingham W.Ashford 2a 2352

and a remarriage for first wife?

Surname First name(s) Spouse District Vol Page
Marriages Sep 1956
COTTINGHAM Florence C HOGBIN Ashford 5b 79
Hogbin Alfred C D Cottingham Ashford 5b 79

It's hypothesis but he could have been divorced and didn't actually marry Bertha Louise and she just took his name. When she subsequently died her death or possible later marriage would likely be registered in her "correct" name.

The information came from the crematorium,it doesnt say that Bertha was his wife but they both resided at East Preston.

I havent got the death certificate.

it maybe one of those to chuck in the too hard basket,

Phone books online show a S.W.COTTINGHAM listed at an East Preston address up to and including 1984.
This does not necessarily exclude it from being your person, as I know women who have kept their husband's listing after they have died / left.

What it does perhaps mean is that whoever was living there at the time of Sidney's death continued to do so for several years. Perhaps a check of that address in old electoral lists will show any other occupants or if Bertha was registered with an alternative surname.
A Google search of the address shows a male architect there now.
