Also, since most of the men in our family use their middle name as their 'known as' I think it might be worth me looking for ?first name? Thomas Singleton.

This stuff really gets you thinking doesn't it? Still having fun tho'

That would fit with Emma number 2 coming along, In the 1871 census I found another daughter, Elizabeth. Born 1863.

It seems this branch of the family all aimed to have 10 kids!

Hi Wendy

Thomas and Emma 1 had more than 3 children. Here is the 1861 in which they have 5. I am assuming that Jane in the census is Selina Jane.

I do tend to think that Mr Singleton came along before her marriage to William but like you I looked for him on the 1871 and couldn't find anyone of that name in the right area. I wonder what made Charles decide to change his name to one of a person he didn't know, or maybe he did meet him in later life. All speculation on my part

Wendy

Wendy Report 16 May 2013 22:49

I found that earlier too - very sad but a good connection.

I like to think that Selina met her man when she worked at the Water Cure, Malvern but I can't find any mention of Singleton there at all. I went through all of the residents names that I could find and matched to census but... nothing. Maybe she met him in the pub and he made up a nice name?

MarieCeleste - the date is from family 'knowledge' that she was registered as Jane Burston at her death (Born Selina Jane Burston and the age on the record stacks up). I need to order the cert to confirm but relatives are pretty certain. Best to be sure tho'

(Love your avatar - very glam!)

Also - I found both records for old Charlie too but no-one knows why there are two records. I might have to order those certs as well...

Tenerife Sun - I know! I find that the easier people are to prove, the less interested I am. Selina is my new obsession... :-S

MC do you think this is the one Wendy meant as she said that she thought Selina used her middle name. I don't know why she would use Burston though as she did marry William Hastilow. The age and place are right.

I'm struggling to find the 1888 death for Selina that Wendy mentions, not sure if it was as Singleton or Hastilow?

(Just like to tidy up the loose ends in my mind)

Thank you MC for that clarification on the marriage.

I'm quite hooked on trying to find a Singleton/Selinas connection now

Hi Wendy, did Charles revert to his birth surname - or is this just a coincidence?

Tenerife Sun (love your user name!), I wondered whether Chas found out his real fathers name before he got married and just used it on the certificate to present a good impression! Especially since he was living at the same address as Caroline/Kate/Catherine or whatever her name should be!!

Beatrice is my Granny and her sisters are Olive, Ethel and Rachel, so that's all perfectly correct. Beattie married John Percival Hancocks.

Chas's birth and marriage certificates were found together a while ago which is what got me started on this - particularly since he had two names so I am sure I have the right Chas. Wish I could go back in time and speak to them! I don't have anything else on Singleton apart from the fact that the girls all formally had that name.

I'm beginning to think that our Selina was bit 'modern' for her time LOL

Selina married William Hastilow (who then later married Phebe Mary Cherry) and had 3 children (2 survived) and I am trying to find the descendants of Robert (died 1980) in Canada - let's see what they can remember...

Thanks again for your help - you really are very good at this :)

Possible other children of Chas and Kate. Stourbridge registration district covers Kingswinford. I was hoping for a daughter called Selina as I'm still not sure we are on the right track.

How are you sure that the marriage cert you have for Charles Singleton is definitely the same person as your Charles Burstone?

Hi Tenerife Sun - that is the right marriage details.

Hi Christine, that would be Emma number 1 - I believe. Some years later, she disappeared (divorce/death??) and he marries Emma Jones, or Emma number 2 as I refer to her!

Wendy

I also wonder if there really was a Thomas Singleton as on the marriage cert as the deceased father of Charles. Perhaps it was his fathers real name. Have you got anything else, Wendy, on Singleton.

Brilliant help – thank you all.
This is where I have got to:

My Great Great Great Grandfather, Tom Burston married Emma Pullen in 1847. Three children – Maria 1849, George 1851 and Selina 1853.

Emma disappeared (I can’t find any marriage or death records yet) so he married Emma Jones in 1870. One child – George in 1874 (I wonder what happened to the first George? – I think he died in 1895 in Kings Norton, Birmingham)

It makes sense that my Great Grandfather Charles is living with his Grandfather and Step-Grandmother as his mother Selina seems to have gone missing too! I think that Selina used her middle name of Jane (death record 1888)

Thomas died in 1889 leaving Emma Jones with George and Charles. They appear in the 1891 census.

Between 1891 and 1901, Charles has left home, moved to Birmingham and changed his name to Singleton, then married Caroline (I know that this bit is accurate and she was also known as Kate and Catherine. Since she was illiterate I suppose she didn’t care how it was spelt and so was happy to be ‘Kate’). The marriage certificate (1904) states Thomas Singleton as Charles' father (deceased)

Thanks again all for getting me back on track, I am off to order some certificates now to see if can find any more clues…
