Flip Report 18 May 2013 15:00

Sue, like you I can't see anything in America or in the travel records. I wonder if they have been so badly mis-transcribed that we simply can't find them in 1881. Maybe we should be looking for later deaths?

The only real constant is John's occupation - originally a tobacconist then a cigar maker - although not sure where that gets us.

CelticShiv

CelticShiv Report 18 May 2013 15:15

Has anyone tried Scotland's people just incase they ended up there? As the deaths would most likely only be on Scotland's people.

Did anyone find the Sarah who married in 1876? To rule her out as his wife remarrying?

I have tried search using wild card m*l*h with no luck and also tried just Sarah Hutchinson incase a death appeared. But nothing.

CelticShiv

CelticShiv Report 18 May 2013 15:19

Might be worth checking the deaths at sea indexes etc. as being a cigar maker it is likely he travelled.

MickB Report 18 May 2013 15:25

Folks,
I am sorry i never referred to my original thread on General Chat. I was advised last night after I went to bed.

Thank you as ever RR for giving everyone the heads up. I am back in circulation after being away for over 12 hours!

Now I need to get to grips with the messages here :-D

Flip

Flip Report 18 May 2013 15:33

Not so sure he must have travelled CelticShiv, his wife was a charwoman on the 1871 census - so maybe he just worked in a cigar making place. If he was an employer was his wife likely to be a charwoman? Just a thought :-S

CelticShiv

CelticShiv Report 18 May 2013 15:38

Where was Sarah born? There is a John and Sarah Smith in the 1881 and 1891 census husbands occupation a tobacconist. Could they of changed surnames for some reason.

Need to see if they exist before 1881 to rule out.

edit: there is a son John with them in 1881, so that perhaps rules them out.

CelticShiv

CelticShiv Report 18 May 2013 15:41

Ether way I think because they disappeared with no finding them elsewhere. A name Chang should perhaps be considered.

I am sure I found a likely match with different surnames last night, but can't find them again now, should of posted when I found them. Doh!!!

Are you stuggling like me on the new ancestry searches CS? It is pretty useless, most of the functionality has gone.

CelticShiv

CelticShiv Report 18 May 2013 16:03

Flip I always go back to the old search function. I hate the new search, misses so many possibilities.

If you click on search on the top just under ancestry.co.uk and then along the top right hand side, it should have an option to switch to old search.
