Was John still alive or just the way the Curate asked the question

After this I can't find a death as there is such a big difference in his age and so many John Dewhurst.

Could you post the details of the 1851 census you have found please? At the moment the only Benjamin/Susannah I can find shows her birth place in Hants and too young for this Susannah.

I wonder if there was a mistake when he called himself bachelor rather than widower? There were obviously older children born before the marriage.

The children born 1818 -1827 were John's first wife Elizabeth
I'm not confident that Elizabeth Fox was his first wife for the reason 2 children were born before 1820.
Elizabeth Fox married a John in 1820 when she was 41. Died in Bolton Street (interned at St. Peters) 19.12.1830 age 51

There was a family of Holmes Henry and Mary living next door in 1841 to John, a John Dewhurst married a Betty Holmes in 1813 St John's Preston.

are you sure about Elizabeth Blezard?

as you say there are many john Dewhurst & Elizabeth combinations in the area. but you say Elizabeth died in 1841 but these are the 2 birth with mmn = Blezard

I feel John was born Preston with saying Clyton on the 1851 census (Clayton ?)

Yes the marriage 1834 is correct.
I sent for the birth James' birth certificate to confirm the maiden name of his mother (born 1841 died 1842 Preston) (and John's wife)

Strange, I wonder why she was named Dewhurst.

I have found the parish record of John Dewhurst who died 1862, this is the one that lived at Crown St. So alas not my John.

Lancashirebmd transcribe mother's maiden names on some of their records - the grand-daughter was regisetered Elizabeth Greenwood, with mothers maiden name recorded as Dewhurst.

I assumed Susannah was their oldest child, as she was the oldest showing on the 1841 census, and a possible marriage for the parents in 1820 - which has now been discounted as you knew of earlier children.

There are a couple of areas in Lancashire called Clayton - not just Clayton le Moors - there's a Clayton Bridge (near Droylesden, Manchester).

Have you found John Dewhurst in 1861 or 1871 to try to narrow down his death date?

it could even be Claughton (on Brock) - N of Preston which is NOT pronounced as it is spelt - I think it is pronounced Clyton or Clayton depending on who is saying it. I'm sure there is someone else around who can confirm that.
