Athur WORLAND

Born 13 Aug 1855 Melbourn Cambs, married Margaret nee Foxhall in Stepney 1877. In 1883 he appeared at Thames Magistrates' Court to answer a summons by his wife seeking protection from him on the grounds that he wished to take the family abroad (she obviously did not wish to go.) Protection was not granted. He had claimed to be the mate on a ship but does not appear in the Master's and Mates lists.
Arthur then disappears, presumably having gone abroad. There is an A Worland on a New York passenger list but how to prove it's him?
Any info on him would be gratefully received

An article in the Morning Post of 20 November 1883 gives the following info (I've summarised).

Margaret Worland of Gerard Street, Poplar had taken out a protection order to stop her husband Arthur , who she had heard was returning home, from taking her goods. She had claimed that when he went away to work he had left her unprovided for and she had to make her own living.

Arthur had called for her to join him (it doesn't say where) but she didn't go and had since then been living with another man. Evidence was called to show that he had left money in the bank for her and the order was annulled.

The article refers to him as a seaman, shame it didn't say where he'd been.

pm from Stanley

Many thanks for that. There is an A Worland that left Liverpool for New York about 13 years later but cannot help feeling if doubtful he would have left it that long. Of course, don't know what the "A" stands for ...

..................................................................................................................................................

The 1896 departure is, as Mike states above, a child (under 12) travelling with his mother and family so not yours.

The problem is, UK departure lists only start from 1890 so he quite possibly left before then and wasn't recorded. Passenger arrivals in places like Australia, Canada and the US are available from much earlier dates on-line but not seeing him on then, seaman can also be very elusive as opposed to people emigrating.

Of course, Arthur may have gone to a country where there are no available records.

I did come across this death record, age is a few years out. I can't find anyone corresponding to it on census records:

England & Wales, Death Index, 1916-2006

Name: Arthur Worland
Birth Date: abt 1852
Date of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar 1938
Age at Death: 86
Registration District: Cambridge
Inferred County: Cambridgeshire
Volume: 3b
Page: 542

My Arthur was born on 13 Aug 1855 so that one looks not to be a contender. All your comments are absolutely right. Perhaps he's another one there will never be a conclusion to ...

Stanley, bear in mind that the age on a death record is only as good as the informant's knowledge or memory .....
