Well Harvey..what a strange thing? The only thing I can think of was that Joseph could not have been her father - away in the war maybe - and that they felt they should do the "right thing"....

I have now sent for birth cert for Hilda Dipalma lets see what emerges Harvey

HeyJudeB4Beatles Report 2 Jun 2013 11:59

My guess is that Elsie Turner was definitely Dipalma. Sounds Italian and would explain why she isn't found before her marriage. My other guess is that your mother wasn't born illegitimately - after all Elsie and Joseph were married and that birth registration is in the name of Turner. BUT it is certainly possible that Joseph wasn't her father. And maybe they decided for some reason to formalise things making Joseph legally her father although technically he already was if he is named on that birth certificate.....or maybe he isn't actually named. Go on buy it!!!!

I love the headless photos - it has Margaret Duchess of Argyle written all over it :-)

Adoption cert is pink with stamp from gen reg office. One obvious possibility is that my mothers dob 27/12/1915 middle of the war my grandad was possibly away in france and my mother was born illig too Elsie. We also found many photos of my gran with unknown man with head chopped off only on the photos! poss Hildas father will send for birth certificate,

Also thank for all your help really appreciate it Harvey

Harvey ,Is the adoption certificate one that the court issued with a court stamp on it and grey or buff in colour issued to the adoptive parents at that time.?as that is different to the replacement birth certificate,

My grandmother Elsie Turner died 05/03/1956 in Manchester although I did not know her she was said to be Italian. Elsie Dilpalma to Joseph Turner in Reddish looks very likely.Joseph Turner died about 1988 aged about 80 in Manchester I think I have found his death. vol10e page 241

FannyByGaslight Report 1 Jun 2013 15:35

The only way Harvey is going to find out if that is his mothers birth is to buy the certificate I would have thought.....To see if the birth date matches.

I know that the "Cawley" tribe can be rather parsimonious with cash but for the sake of under a tenner it must be worth a go..

Hi Flip

I wonder if Harvey - as he has the certificate seemingly - found it in his mum's things after she died?

We really do need him to come back to the thread especially to see if he knows anything about Joe and Elsie. Because there are an awful lot of coincidences that a Joe Turner married an Elsie (Dipalma) - the only marriage I can find for Joe and Elsie and they had a daughter Hilda whose birth registration matches that of Harvey's mum :-S

One thing bothers me, how did you discover your mother was adopted in 1930 - if you were not aware of it before her death? What led you to the adoption certificate?

Edit, sorry this posted before I finished.

There is also the possibility that her mother (or father) re-married and she was adopted by the new parent, it is recorded in the same way and looks like a normal adoption.

If you look at the 1891 census, Martha's age is 42 crossed out and replaced in margin by 40

Jane's is replaced by 15 but I think the original said 11
