Being a northerner I've no idea if Plaistow is near Bethnal Green .....

That looks promising, MarieCeleste.
I don't know London either, but on my road atlas Plaistow seems to be about 3 miles from Bethnal Green.
Of course, that may seem farther to a Londoner than it does to me in a rural area.
