Hi. I am looking for any info on Clifford Roland Burgess. He was born sometime after 1911 in NZ (assuming that as there is no record of his birth in England.

His parents were Thomas Burgess (1880 wigan), a coal miner, and Margaret Alice Ellison (1882 Wigan). They had at least two other children born in England, Jonathen Arnold (1906) and Edna May (1910). At some stage the family emigrated to NZ where Clifford married Ellen Joyce Everitt.

I can find details of Clifford in the NZ Army during WWII and various Electrol Rolls from 1946, but nothing about his birth or marriage.

*** Update I think I have found Clifford's parents in 1928 with Jonathan Arnold and some other children. They were living in Westport Buller ****

According to the Electoral Rolls.

There is a Margaret Alice Burgess living in Martins Road Riccarton with a Thomas Burgess. That is the address Clifford gives on his Army papers. Your Margaret Alice is living in Buller with her family. They are not the same family they just have the same name and I am more than certain that Clifford belonged to the other couple.

They married in 1946. Clifford Burgess died 3 Sept1990.

Jonathan Arnold Burgess born 15 Nov 1907 married Mary Palmer South 1933.

He died 15 July 1990 Nelson

I'm inclined to agree with Astra that there are two separate families that coincidentally have the same parent's names of Thomas and Margaret Alice.

Sidney Amos BURGESS died in NZ in 1962 aged 69.

There is a record for him (with this spelling) at National Archives in Kew. States he was born in Chatham, Kent on 15 Nov 1892. So seems this not the right family for Clifford, but more likely the Riccarton one, as posted above.

Following on form the Riccarton Burgesses ; in 1969 Margaret Alice, Clifford Roland and Ellen Joyce all living at the same address in Lyttelton ... Margaret Alice is a widow..

At the same address is Michael John Burgess a student.. he would be at least 21 to be able to vote..

Margaret Alice died 1 March 1971 .. you can access her probate records through our archives, the fee is probably $20.

I think Michael is in Riccarton in 1972 but after that I would be guessing there are quite a few people named Michael John Burgess.

I had a look through the phone listings and there are several M J Burgess, a couple of them are in the Christchurch area and I guess he would be about 65 - 66 now.
