Hello Alexandra and welcome to the Community Boards.

There are some excellent suggestions made but also, if you look on the Genealogy Chat board, you will see lot of hints and tips on research.

Another free site to check out to help you in your research....

Put this link in your favourites box.
Make it your first port of call for certs after 1837

The mother's maiden name does not appear on the GRO index until after 1911.

Use freebmd.................it covers up to around 1955

http://www.freebmd.org.uk/

There are also some County sites which include the MMN on earlier indices, due to the work of many volunteers

However, your complaint should be sent directly to GR................

Like Dea, I would never consider using GR for research...................

Do you not use the FreeBMD site for cert. references ? - It costs you nothing to get the ref. numbers or to see who else is on the page for marriages etc.

You then order them through the GRO site and they only cost £9.25.

If you need a more recent ref. than they have on there - you can always ask on here for someone with a sub to to one of the other sites to look it up for you.

I never use this site for records but if what you say is correct then I think you have a case and should contact GR on the matter.

Is anyone else as annoyed as me?
with the new changes

it means if you want to get a copy of a
certificate, you can no longer get the reference number unless you pay for
it.
and also you are no longer able to get the mothers maiden name - when you
do not know it. I am extremeley unhappy, does that mean I will get a refund, as i can no longer get what I have paid for?

I am afraid I think you will loose a lot of customers - if you have taken
all these tools away

So you are now getting basically the name and area and nothing else to help
you find someone - unless you pay an awful lot of money for searches.
And to be honest the new search option is rubbish!
