Just for perspective, a tree on Ancestry has Peter & Susannah's marriage certificate.

They married 16 July 1855 in the Chapel of Farnworth in Prescot.

Peter Gullavin age 20, a labourer as was his father John.

Susannah Cannon age 25, her father John Cannon was also a labourer.

Neither had been married before and both stated as living Widnes.

Witnesses: Elizabeth Cannon and Robert Henderson ??
..................................................................................................................

So, Peter was way too young to be Paul's father. Paul would have been born a Cannon which is reflected in the census already posted.

In 1891 Paul is named as Pat born Ireland. He is a collier at this time.

He married Sarah Ann Lyon in Prescot RD in 1876

Re the marriage posted by PH - Lancs BMD shows Susan Cannon married John McDonald at Christ Church, Ince.

Same church as marriage for Daniel Pennington/Mary Ellen Cannon

wonder why would change to step mothers maiden name, maybe cornelius did the same ,

Flip

Flip Report 17 Jun 2013 07:02

Surely Paul is Susannah's son born before her marriage? Peter Gullivan would have been 12 when he Paul was born, so highly unlikely to be his father.

The only census to record Paul's name as Gullivan was 1861, probably because that was his mothers name by then, he was more likely to have been born as Cannon.

Astra

Astra Report 17 Jun 2013 07:03

I think maybe that Paul would have been born as Cannon and not Gullivan.
I assumed that he was Susannah's son born 7 - 8 years before she married.
I can't find a baptism record for him in France or Ireland.
There is no reason why Cornelius would change his name as he was born a Gullivan after Susannah's marriage.

Have you found Peter in 1861 - he's not with Susannah?

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 17 Jun 2013 08:11

When Susannah Cannon and Peter Gullavin married 1855 he was stated as a labourer from Widnes.

When daughter Mary married William Garner on 20 May 1872 at Low House Chapel in St Helen's her father Peter Gullivan is listed as a plasterer. She lived Eccleston Street.

On both marriages one of the witnesses was an Elizabeth Cannon/Canning - could that be Susannah's mother?

On both certificates all parties made their "x" so wouldn't know if their names were spelled correctly.

(Info from certificates on Ancestry/Mundia tree).

all the above is the family i am hunting for
elizabeth cannon/ canning nee brash is her mother.

havent found peter gullivan, just know that on 1861 census he is not with them, interesting that he is a plasterer in 1872 and not listed as deceased? so he should be on the 1871 census.

I haven't managed to find anything on Peter other than the 1855 marriage (and his name on daughter's marriage). He doesn't appear to be on any census, nor can I see a death (E&W) nor anything on passenger lists, unless someone else has found anything?

There's a workhouse admission in Manchester, 1908 on family search, may be worth checking out on FMP to view the image (Cornelius Cannon, no age given)
