I know what you mean flip looks like a trip to ro coming up

Flip

Flip Report 18 Jun 2013 17:35

I'm not altogether convinced by that tree on ancestry or the change of name. The tree shows lots of info, but not backed up by any evidence - a simple trip to the RO would get a lot of the info from parish records and may relate to more than one family.

All we know is from the marriage and 1901 census - how many times have these been wrong? However, if we accept them his birth was not registered neither under Charles or Henry James - unless someone can find otherwise - PLEASE :-)

I got suckered into the ancestry tree - but I really doubt the research done, it all fits in a way, but somehow not right.

Looks likely for their deaths, but I wonder why he married as Charles?? Seems a bit odd.

All this points to that 1871 census posted earlier in the thread being the right family, obviously before Charles/Henry was born - but again there is already a Henry in the family, I thought he was at a school in 1881 but maybe he died?

The tree has their mother as Jane Woodhatch, who died 5/5/1877 at Stockwell smallpox hospital. It also has another child after Charles, Elizabeth Jane Rose born 28/5/1874, born Kingston.

A public member tree on Ancestry has no documentation, but very precise on dates. It says Henry James Harvey was born 6/6/1872, Wandsworth. Married Edith 12/9/1999 and has all their children's details.

Henry James died 27/9/1947, Edith born 28/10/1876 died 28/5/1960.

However, like I say there is no documentation attached, and it is unsourced.

This looks like the relevant naval record (available to download, costs £3 odd:

Interesting link Chris, I'm sure I looked at that family earlier.

IF (a big IF) the ages are accurate, we could try to narrow down the birth quarter - what exact date was the marriage please?

Added, if my maths are correct, he would have been born between April and September 1872 - the marriage date might narrow this down to just 1 quarter.

Tracy Report 18 Jun 2013 09:59

hi all just comeback from work right there is no deceased listed on marriage cert for fathers his age is 27

Flip

Flip Report 18 Jun 2013 09:53

Also, from the marriage certificate are either of their fathers stated "deceased" - I see Edith's father died in 1894, followed by her mother in 1900.

Just had a look at the Charles from Chatham Kent. He has a RN record on national archives, and was with his parents on 1901 census in Chatham. The image has the work category added afterwards as well, but it says Men. This has been inserted after Royal Navy and before Stoker.

Flip

Flip Report 18 Jun 2013 08:47

Hi Chris, I'm not sure - it's been written afterwards against a number of the people who have stated RN. Looking at the census images in that collection there are a lot of RN who have this written on afterwards - think it could be something to do with the category of worker.

Chris Ho :) Report 18 Jun 2013 08:36

Looking at 1901 image, is that Mer, written by side of Navy?...(Merchant)

Chris :)

Flip

Flip Report 18 Jun 2013 07:59

You say he was a seaman, but on the 1901 census it shows he was in the royal navy, so there should be a service record on national archives.

There are 5 records for plain Charles (plus a couple more with additional names) 2 can be eliminated as they are found on 1901 census - 1 in Hong Kong the other in Kent, which leaves:

Charles born Portsmouth 4/6/1874
another born Bristol 1/1/1872
another, no birth place on summary, born 14/8/1874

What date did they marry, and what age did he give please? Do you have any of their children's birth certificates or baptisms to check if he ever gave a middle name?
