Hi Christine. Yes that thought had crossed my mind. I justwant to be sure that we have the right Annie Fisher/ Groom.

The death of an Annie Groom that you found in 1923 is of a lady of 44 years that was born around 1879, so not Ruby who was born in 1894.

As she was Ruby Mary A, it could be that the A stood for Annie and she was known by that name.

What if Annie did not die, but that was what the children were told to stop them asking awkward questions? Have you considered that she could have left home, gone off with someone else or have been in some sort of hospital long term?

I am confused by the info I have found on my mums mother. My mum told me that her mother died when she ( my mum) was little. I have found a record of an Annie Groom who died in 1923 on the free BMD website. My mum was born in 1919, which would make her 4 when her mother died. Yet everyone seems to come up with a Ruby Mary A Fisher, who was married to my grandad, now she didn't die until 1981, when she was 86. My eldest sister has told me, that there was no female adults, apart from my mum, and her step sister living with grandad. So who was Annie Groom Late Stevens, formerly Fisher, named as mother on my mums birth certificate. If Ruby A Mary was my mums mother, where was she when my mum was growing up? I am so confused. :-(

These days it means someone has assumed a name - maybe because they lived with someone called Stevens, or maybe because they simply did like their original name!

I have a marriage certificate (confirmed by the lady herself) where the lady in question lived with someone and was known by his name - so the cert states late xxa smith formerly xxe Jones. Formally being her maiden name (and she changed her forename slightly just to confuse issues) late being the name she assumed. In this particular case "Formerly" was actually her previous married name, not even her maiden name!

So if Ruby Fisher married Groom, she may well have been called Ruby Stevens for a while, but not officially.

There doesn't appear to be any marriage of Ruby A M Fisher before her marriage to Groom.I looked earlier.

Just did a search and found a Annie Groom death 1923 Bristol. That would make my mum 4 when she died. Mum had always told us her mother had died when she was young. I wonder if I have the right Annie Groom? :-(

Hi Reggie. Yes I had posted before, but now mums birth certificate has come, I am confused by the name of her mother. Its down on the cert as being. Annie Groom Late Stevens formerly Fisher. Not sure where the Annie comes from, or the Stevens bit. I suppose she could have been married briefly before she married my Grandfather. Mum had always told us her mother had died when she was young, she didn't even know her own mothers name. My mum passed away nearly 6 years ago now. I am hopeless with all this research stuff, and keep using up my credits, because I don't know how to go about finding this info out. :-S

ErikaH Report 21 Jun 2013 12:57

No marriage on freebmd to match that info.

WHERE was your mother born?

What was her name?

Who did she name as her father when she married?

Dea Report 21 Jun 2013 12:57

Firstly, are you certain that you have the correct birth cert ?

Do all the details on there match up except for the first name of your grandmother?

Can you tell us what name is on the cert and what name you expected it to be please?

Can you give all the other details on the cert please?

Dea x

Hi. Trying to find out who my grandmother was on my mothers side. Today a full copy of my mums Birth certificate came. In the box under Mothers name, was Annie Groom, late Stevens, formerly Fisher. Wife of Alfred Groom ( mums dad) Mum was always told that her mother died when she was little, but I can't seem to find any records. I have done some research, but the first name of my grandmother on mums Birth Cert is different to records I have found. Please can anyone help? My mum was born on 1. 12. 1919.
