I am in Busselton WA ...just had a whopper of a storm yesterday here .

I don't know how to help with this one ,all I can say is perhaps William went to ireland on his own .although I cannot find Ann after the 1841.

I can only see what the census tells me and it tells me Ann and her boys all bn Gloucestershire.
I thought my Waters came from Gloucestershire too but they ended up all coming from Somerset ,funny old hobby this one.
Will have another dig around today .

Yes, I was aware that the 1841 census said Ann and her family were born in Gloucestershire but I chose to disregard that as either a mistake or merely that Ann was not wanting to disclose where she really came from.
Incidentally, looking at the census image again I saw that also living with the Baileys was another young woman named Richards who also had two children and no evidence of the father. What was going on???
Either the Baileys were charitable people or perhaps they were exploiting them in some way?
BTW Sue where are you? I am in Northcliffe in Western Australia. Came here in 1964.

If Ann did go there it could have been before the famine started in 1845 and if she was working as a servant for a person with money she and her sons could have survived OK. Pure speculation of course.
The fact remains that my ggrandfather William definitely enlisted in Cork so he got there somehow!

To be honest, John, I don't think anyone would choose to go to Ireland to live at that time - it was in the era of the famines and thousands of Irish people were leaving to come to England and Scotland.

Ann could have been anything from 20 to 24 in 1841 - ages were rounded down to the nearest 5 for those over 20.

I have looked at the original image of the 1841 census and it def says Ann and her sons all born Gloucestershire.
I know Bristol very well as I was born in Chipping Sodbury only about 10 miles from there.

My Walters are also from Somerset but your names ring no bells with my side of the family but I will see into it more when I get a bit more time.

I live in Australia now from 1966 so all my research over the net.

The Bailey family with Ann in Gloucestershire in 1841 is not the correct family is this what you mean.

Thank you for our interest and your researches. To answer your last questions first:
I think my Ann was born in Somerset, not Goucestershire, though she certainly ended up there in Bristol. My branch of the Walters family comes from Dorset and Somerset.
Mrs Bailey was from Ireland which when added to Ann's son William enlisting in the Grenadier Guards in Cork makes me believe that Mrs Bailey encouraged Ann to go there with her young family. William was certainly in the Grenadier Guards, I have had that confirmed by the regiment's archivist.
When William married he said that his father's name was Richard and that he was a Cordwainer. This may or may not be true but there was a Richard Cock who was a Cordwainer about Ann's age who lived in a village about a stone's throw from Ann's village, but who married someone else soon after Alfred was born. So I put two and two together and made about five!
So I am not sure she went to Ireland but how else did William get there? He was 18 when he enlisted.
I am reasonably certain that both William and Alfred were born in Dorset though it does not mean that the Alfred you found born in Gloucestershire was not him. He may have grown up there (with whom?) so just assumed he was born there.
As usual these researches create more puzzles than they solve which is why I was wanting to get at some Irish records to try and verify Ann's and her family's existence there.

Do you have anything else on Ann ,there are a lot of Anns from Gloucestershire that she could be .

Are you sure she went to Ireland .
Please give us everything you have on the family .
Do you have proof that William joined the army :-)

I can't seem to find it . :-(

I have found Ann, born 1822 in Somerset (who is unmarried) with her two sons William and Alfred living with a family called Bailey in Bristol in the 1841 census.
My next contact with the family is when William enlists in the Grenadier Guards from Cork, Ireland in 1855.
I am trying to fill in the gaps in Ann's life and find out about Alfred.
Does anyone know of online sources that could help me establish if Ann did go to Ireland with her family, where she was living, and when she died?
I did find an online source that said an Anne Walters died in County Carlow in 1882 who was born in 1820 (place unstated) which looks as though it could possibly be her, but just easily not.
I would be most appreciative if anyone could suggest online sources for me to search.
