If you go to the national archives web site if you no the ships name/number I think you can search the ships crew list

Hi Jude
someone in the family seems to think that he was on the ss eastern laying the atlantic cable in 1866, i know that he worked for the indian rubber company that made it but can find no evidence that he was on the ship, we have a piece of the cable but he could have got that when they made it.

A little tip about looking at records in Bristol. Bristol is now a unitary authority, but current BMD records consider it part of Gloucestershire. However, that hasn't always been the case. The parts of Bristol that lie south of the river Avon were once part of Somerset. ;-)

Not much use im afraid, the original does not give anymore info than the transcript, I think the date range rules this out as well, although im not sure if this relates to birth or the range of the records

Good afternoon
Would anyone be able to do a look up for me on the merchant seaman record on find my past, for Alfred knight born in bristol gloucestershire, he was born in 1849.
Im not sure if it is the person im looking for but thought there may be a clue on the record..his fathers name was elias knight
