My great grandmother had a baby girl in 1913 called Tilly (Matilda). The baby died aged 1 in 1915 of whooping cough. I have a birth certificate and a death certificate for the baby but I have been unable to find a grave/burial site for Tilly. There seems to be no record of her ever being buried/cremated. Im getting really frustrated now!! Help or suggestions please anyone!!

Where have you looked?

Have you checked with the Church/cemetery nearest to the address at which the child died?

Welcome to GR .....

Sadly sometimes you may never find where or when they were buried and sometimes some church yards have been "moved" and this has resulted in not really knowing where they went!!

One church in our area did this! horrible

When you say that you have searched, you haven't said which records you have looked at. It may be that Matilda is not named on a headstone but is possibly buried in a family grave. In the course of my researched I found that my Great Aunt's stepson was buried in the grave of her sister and brother-in-law The child died in 1915. There was no headstone erected at the time as none of the family could afford one as the two adults already buried there had died at a young age and had left 3 very young children to be looked after. It was the grandchildren of the adults that had a marker put up in memory of their grandparents that they had never known and included the name of the child on the stone.

Quite often a when a baby died in those days they were buried in a coffin of someone else who was being buried at the same time. This practice carried on for a long time after your ancestor died.

My husband's baby brother died aged just 12 hours in 1946. We found out that he was buried in a coffin with a 2 year old girl who was no relation. We had an idea of which church yard he would have been buried in (the closest to where the family lived) and we found the record at the County Record Office although there is no headstone to mark the grave.
