John was registered as the man's son......so that will have to be taken at face value.

Who registered John's birth?

maybe family stories have got the generation wrong and it was John's grandfather George that was killed in WW2. His death was in 1943 as shown in a previous post

I assume John does not remember ever seeing his father

I wonder if it is worth sending for grandfather George's will to see if George junior is named in the will

Reggi. we now have Cecelia's family tree, going back to 1774, Cecelia did marry George in 1935, or 119 Warrington Road Leigh, still until we get the Birth Cert of him.we dont know much about him, he does not appear in the 2nd ww Records. which is most confusing, i am begining to thik he was never in the 2nd ww, we have absolutly nothing to date about him,
Regards Joy Johns wife.

Joy,

As there are no WW2 records on line, I'm unsure as to how you can say there are no records for this man.

BUT.................wait until you get the birth cert.

Then............cross-refer with the death I posted.

If there's a match......buy the death cert, to find out the informant's details

OR.........research George's siblings..............try to find any living descendants, who may know something about him.

Info about a couple of them has been given above - and Anastasia (Oddie) had a daughter (see freebmd). The daughter married and had two children

IF............and only IF...........the death I posted is the right man, one would assume that there was contact among family members, in view of the location of his death.

George junior may not have been in the services. If his job was a fairly important one in a cotton mill it may have been considered as a 'reserved occupation' as may mills were converted to turning out service uniforms.

George senior's will if you send for it could be useful to you in tracing other descendents and may also state what geoge junior was doing during the war.

Reggie'
i went through commonweath records, there were 4 George Lancaster's that were killed in the 2nd ww. and plenty of Lancasters in the Army but nothing whatsoever that related to John's Father. sorry ......i am not very good at this, so don't quite know what you mean about Oddie being on 192 with her husband of the year 2002

The records only cover those killed.........you can't deduce from those whether or not the man served during WW2.

Service records for WW2 are not in the public domain

If you've ordered George's birth cert, I would suggest that you wait until you receive it.............

Anastasia Lancaster married Thomas Oddie.....info posted above

They produced one daughter.....she got married.

The daughter and her husband appear together on the 2002 Electoral Roll (on www.192.com)

They had two children..................

Lancashire Ann.
wouldnt John's Grandfather have bee too old to be in the 2nd ww. John never new his father, it is all very strange........his mother Cecelia told him that his father was killed at the end of the war.......then i cant possibly see how he was Johns Father, as John was Born dec. 1945. Must check that out, if Johns granfather died in 1943.
that is the year, his granmother Died.
thank you

Yes he would have been too old for active service but he could have been killed at home by eg falling bomb/masonry

As VE day was 8 May 1945 & VJ day 2 Sept 1945 George could still have been John's father.

Are you sure that John's grandmother died in 1943 not the 1950 one I have posted above. There is no Annie/Anastasia who died in the Wigan area in that year. As their daughters name was Anastasia it is a reasonable assumption that John's grandmother Annie's real name was Anastasia as well.

probate of grandfather's will was given to widow Annie which indicates she was alive at the probate date in late 1943.

Does the address on the prbate record look familiar?
