Joy Report 6 Jul 2013 06:26

I am looking for information on my great-great-great-grandfather Alex McIntosh. According to the 1851 Scottish Census he was a Farm Manager aged 52 and was born in Nairn-Ardclach. The census was for Cawdor Ecclesiastical Parish and the address was Newlands of Torrich. His wife's name was Jane, aged 59 and she was born in Nairn-Cawdor - I know that her maiden name was McKenzie and if possible any information on her would also be appreciated.

Scottish records are on Scotlands People which is a pay to view site

You could try Family Search site though that's a free site

Welcome to the boards, Joy.

Where have you already looked for information about them, so that we do not duplicate any work that you have done?

Thank-you

I will re-post that marriage. Although I am still not sure. I have a feeling her name should be Grant but she may have been previously married.

I am bamboozled to say the least...!

John McIntosh and Grace Grant McIntosh also had a son Alex. 1816....they also appear to be the parents of Grace Grant McIntosh who went onto marry Simon Morrison ...
Could Alex at No 28 (1841) be a Brother to John....???

Joy Report 7 Jul 2013 07:08

Thank you to everyone who have researched and replied to my post.

Shirley I had previously tried Scotlands People and Family Search without much success.

Patchem I have looked as I have said at Scotlands People and Family Search, also have looked at Ancestry.com and Census records.

Astra yes the 1851 Census record is the one I found. The baptism record that you have found with father as John and mother as Isabel Stuart may be the Alex McIntosh I am looking for. The McIntosh web site you gave does have all the other information correct. The marriage of Alex and Jean McKenzie I believe is correct. In the IGI Record of his marriage it has his birth about 1801 Of Firhnie, Nairn.

Eringobragh1916 like you I am bamboozled with all the different information. You say that it appears that Grace Grant McIntosh who married Simon Morrison was the daughter of John McIntosh and Grace Grant McIntosh, but she was definitely the daughter of Alex and Jane McIntosh - IGI Record birth 21/10/1825 father Alexander Mackintosh and mother Jane Mackenzie I have been trying to find out why John and Grace both the children of Alex and Jane have their second names as Grant and believe that it must be connected somehow to their parents.

Helen the 1861 and 1871 Census details that you have found I believe do show Jane McIntosh and also the death details I believe are her. I had been trying to find when both Alex and Jane died but had not had any success.

I am sorry to answer all the posts with this one reply, but was unsure of any other way to do it.

I am most grateful to you all.

Joy

Joy Report 7 Jul 2013 07:48

My apologies Eringobragh for crediting Astra for the McIntosh web site - I was reading all the different replies and got a little confused.

Quite some time ago I was given the names of the parents of Alexander McIntosh as Alexander McIntosh and Elizabeth Wallace and that he was born in 1802 in Edinkillie, Moray, Scotland - I definitely do not believe that this is correct.

Joy....No apologies necessary... We all "work" together so to speak ..

Grace Grant McIntosh married Simon Morrison below....

Simon Morrison
Spouse's Name: Grace Mackintosh
Event Date: 25 Sep 1846
Event Place: Cawdor,Nairn,Scotland

It may be worthwhile checking their marriage to see who her parents were....

Quite some years ago I did an IGI search on Familysearch which gave details of the children of Alexander Mackintosh and Jane Mackenzie and Grace Grant Mackintosh is named there and her birth was on the 21st October 1825 and christening on 28/10/1825 Forres, Moray, Scotland. I have just done a death search on Ancestry.com and there is a record of her death there and her parents are named as Alex McIntosh and Jane McKenzie.
The Jessie Rose housemaid in the above 1851 Census married Grace's brother John (my great-great-grandfather) on 2/9/1853.

Thank you very much for that information on John and Grace Mackintosh from the Cawdor Graveyard. It is possible that John was Alexander's brother, just guessing here though, but is worth looking into.
If John and Grace are buried in the Cawdor Graveyard then it is quite likely that Alexander and Jane are also.
