My Grandmother was married to Alexander Martin who died in 1922. She then married an Edward Linsdell but I am unable to find this marriage. Her maiden name was eastoe her first marriage was 1903. He took on six children and although my father never said he had step brothers or sisters I was wondering if Edward himself had been married before. Thanks Christine

As Christine is a fairly new poster, I will send her a friendly message on how to return to her thread. :-)

Rather odd! If the marriages above all relate to the same man (and there's no reason why they shouldn't) then he was married twice before he married Lydia, as shown above. The first time to Rosina in 1896 and the second to Harriett in 1918. However, the 1911 shows him already with Harriet:

1911 England Census

Name: Edward Thomas Linsdell

I can find no record of a death for Rosina Lindsell, and there is nothing in divorce records on ancestry or National Archives.

There is this:

England & Wales, Marriage Index, 1916-2005

Name: Rosina Linsdell
Spouse : William P Start
Date of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep 1929
Registration District: West Ham
Inferred County: Essex
Volume Number: 4a
Page Number: 594
...............................................................................................................

ADDED:

This death matches the age on the marriage 1896 to Linsdell:

England & Wales, Death Index, 1916-2007
Name: Rosina Start
Birth Date: abt 1874
Date of Registration: Mar 1937
Age at Death: 63
Registration District: Islington
Inferred County: Greater London
Volume: 1b
Page: 400

EDIT: There is also a Rosina Start of a similar age on th 1901 & 1911 married to a Joseph J so that death might be hers.

Going back to the question whether Edward Thomas Linsdell had children from a previous marriage, I can't find him or Rosina on the 1901. It looks like Ada Florence on the 1911, recorded as Linsdell, was actually Harriett's daughter from a previous relationship per this 1901:

TONKS, Edward Head Married M 54 1847 Brass Finisher St Lukes, London
TONKS, Mary Wife Married F 51 1850 St Lukes, London
BOWTELL, Harriett Daughter Married F 25 1876 Tailoress St Lukes, London
TONKS, Susan Daughter Single F 20 1881 Feather Curler Stepney, London
TONKS, Edward Son Single M 13 1888 Errant Boy Stepney, London
BOWTELL, Florence Grand Daughter F 3 1898 Bow, London

Piece: 329 Folio: 117 Page: 15
Registration District: Mile End Old Town
Civil Parish: Mile End Old Town

Address: 2, Silver Street, Mile End Old Town County: London

ADDED:
Her father was William Arthur Bowtell per baptism.

Well Christine, I would certainly recommend getting the 1918 and the 1925 marriage certificates for Edward to see what he gives as his marital status.

Looks like he was still married to at least one wife when he married the next!
