I'm trying to find the origins of my ancestor James Saw, also known as James Ware/Wear/Weir, born circa 1830. Working backwards, as James Saw he died 1902 age 72 in Farnborough, Kent. In 1901, Chelsfield, Kent, James Ware was 78, from Brasted. On the death certificate of his wife Ann in 1898 he was James Saw. In 1891 Chelsfield James Saw was 60 from N/K, Wilts. In 1881 Cudham, Kent, James Weir was 60 from N/K, Wilts. On the birth certificate of his son John in 1872 he was James Saw. In 1871 Brasted, Kent, James Ware was 49 from N/K, Wilts. In 1868 James Saw, 35, married Ann Brook well in Sevenoaks. In 1861 James Wear was 34 from Oxford, his wife Amelia from Little Bedwin, Wilts. In 1855 James Saw married Amelia White in Brasted. In 1851 he might be the James Ware age 21 from place unknown, in Cookham, Berks. Then I am stuck! |

I know you gave the info in your post, Elizabeth, but it's sometimes easier to grasp if it's laid out as per the census records............... |

Out of interest, more on Amelia, though I know it doesn't help with the search for James: |

Thank you everyone for the time and effort you have all gone to on my behalf. Sorry I haven't replied sooner - my internet connection went down. It does look as though my next step is the obtain the marriage certificate for James' first marriage (to Amelia). I think I will only find James' birth/baptism if I can find a reason for his use of 2 surnames - perhaps one was the surname of a step-father. It is like looking for a needle in a haystack though as I don't know which part of the country to look in. |

The marriage certificate for James Saw to Amelia White, in 1855, gives both of them as "of full age" and the space for James Saw's father is blank. |
