I'm looking for some help to get information about my Boulton side of the family.
Harry married Doris Brough Turfrey and had two children I know of, there could be more!
Arthur, born in Stone, Staffordshire in 1924
Violet, born in Stone, Staffordshire in 1923
I have the marriage certificate of Arthur but my family know nothing of the generation before. Any information would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

GlitterBaby Report 17 Jul 2013 18:19

Harry Boulton appears to be a common name in Staffordshire so think you need the marriage cert to confirm his age and the details of his father

GlitterBaby Report 17 Jul 2013 18:21

Sarah Report 17 Jul 2013 18:32

After checking the very neat writing on the marriage certificate it appears he was called Henry.

GlitterBaby Report 17 Jul 2013 18:35

Can you confirm the occupation of both Harry/Henry and his father from the marriage cert

Sarah Report 17 Jul 2013 18:36

Both are recorded as farm labourers.

MarieCeleste Report 17 Jul 2013 21:27

Sarah, you suggested that there may be more children than Violet and Arthur - it looks like there are.

Go to FreeBMD and search for births with surname Boulton and mother's maiden name Turfrey from 1920. There are 4 possible births in total.

Sarah Report 17 Jul 2013 21:51

Thanks very much! Your help is much appreciated.

mgnv Report 18 Jul 2013 18:21

One can purchase BMD certs from the GRO or the local rego office that holds the original registration (or 1st copy in the case of church marrs).
Some local offices have an online index, and this necessarily has difft info from the GRO index - see
Here, I'm looking at

Staffordshire Birth indexes for the years: 1898
Surname Forename(s) Sub-District Registers At Mother's Maiden Name Reference
TURFREY Doris Brough Longton Stoke-On-Trent TURFREY LGN/098/078

Clearly, an illegitimate birth, but is her mum Florrie or Elsie? - you'll need her b.cert to tell this, I think.

Re sorting out which Henry/Harry is yours.
Who were the witnesses on his m.cert? - they're usually sibs of the couple, or the sibs' spouses.
What is Harry's age and address on the m.cert?

Sarah Report 18 Jul 2013 19:14

Hello, and many thanks for your research.
I already have the birth certificate for Doris Brough Turfrey, it names her mother as Florence Annie Turfrey. Her father is named as what looks like Gerry, he is recorded as as gardener, deceased.

The witnesses on Henry Boulton's marriage certificate are A. V. Turfrey, brother of Annie and C. M. Boulton - no idea who this is!

Sarah Report 18 Jul 2013 19:18

Forgot to add Harry is 32 at the time of his marriage. I can't see an address. It just says Swynnerton as place living at time of marriage.

Sarah Report 18 Jul 2013 19:43

Sorry, I keep saying Harry because that's what my family have heard him called - I mean Henry, don't mean to confuse!

Sarah Report 18 Jul 2013 23:10

Hi Maureen, thanks for the info. Very hard to tell if it's Henry..... I hope it could be, but as you say the dates are questionable. I've no idea when Henry died but it was before 1974, because the death certificate I have for Doris states she is his widow.

Pure speculation, but maybe this is C M Boulton:

His death is registered as Harry:

Harry Boulton
Probate Date: 5 Jan 1956

Death Place: Burton Upon Trent
Registry: Nottinghamshire, England

Of 70 Horninglow Road Burton on Trent. Probate to widow Doris Brough Boulton, £768 13s 3d.

Birth Date: abt 1886
Date of Registration: Sep 1955
Age at Death: 69
Registration District: Burton upon Trent
Inferred County: Staffordshire

ADDED: This means he was slightly older than originally thought (few years between them so could have lied when they married) but it makes Maureen's 1891 census more likely.

Flip Report 19 Jul 2013 12:10

Assuming the 1891 census is the correct family, and it does look likely - this would be them in 1881 (note the child John Thornhill Boulton, he appears with Henry in 1911)
